No amount of warnings is ever enough.

Neither is any amount of scare tactics.

On Saturday, as Americans were celebrating Independence Day, 22-year-old Devon Staples was in the backyard of a friend's home in Calais, Maine.

As the Associated Press reports, Staples decided to place a fireworks mortar tube on his head. He then set it off.

He was instantly killed.

This death comes despite a graphic YouTube video released by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission warning of the dangers of fireworks. The video specifically warned of the dangers of placing one's head anywhere near them.

It reminded people never to relight a dud, always to have water handy and always ensure that bottle rockets have a clear path. It explained how putting one's head anywhere near a so-called aerial device could result in quite literally, having your head blown off.

However, even in this video, the CPSC didn't imagine that anyone would actually want to put a mortar tube on their heads and then attempt launch.

I have contacted the state Department of Public Safety to request comment and to get confirmation that in Staples's case, alcohol was involved, as some reports have suggested. I will update, should I hear.

The CPSC's annual fireworks report (PDF) shows at least 11 deaths occurred in nonoccupational fireworks-related deaths in 2014. Four died in house fires, seven as a direct result of fireworks impact. 10,500 people were injured in fireworks-related incidents.

Of those, 7,000 were during the period June 20-July 20. Some 74 percent of those injured were male, while 35 percent of those injured were below the age of 15. Injuries to the head, face or ears accounted for 19 percent of all injuries.

What actually killed him? Did it blow his head up? Break his neck?

I saw a vid on Facebook today of idiots lighting fireworks up their noses and out their arses. It was quite hilarious.

I would assume the concussion could kill you if the mortar was big enough. Dont know what happened here though.

Man shoots off firework from top of his head, dies instantly

CALAIS, Maine (AP) - A 22-year-old man who was drinking and celebrating the Fourth of July tried to launch a firework off the top of his head, killing him instantly, authorities said Sunday.

Devon Staples and his friends had been drinking and setting off fireworks Saturday night in the backyard of a friend's home in eastern Maine, said Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.

Staples, 22, of Calais, a small city on the Canadian border, placed a reloadable fireworks mortar tube on his head and told his friends he was going to light it, McCausland said. But his friends urged him to stop.

"Apparently, he thought that was a great idea," McCausland said. "His friends they thought dissuaded him from doing it, and the next thing they knew, he ignited the fireworks and he was killed instantly."

Staples's brother Cody told the Daily News of New York that he was a few feet away when his brother lit the firework and was the first to come to his side after it exploded.

"There was no rushing him to the hospital. There was no Devon left when I got there," said 25-year-old Cody Staples, who called it an accident.

"Devon was not the kind of person who would do something stupid. He was the kind of person who would pretend to do something stupid to make people laugh," he said.

Staples' death is the first fireworks fatality in Maine since the state legalized fireworks on Jan. 1, 2012, authorities said.

Lawmakers had voted to repeal a 1949 law banning fireworks, reasoning the industry would create jobs and generate revenue.

State fire marshals were also investigating several other Fourth of July fireworks accidents involving injuries in Friendship, Jefferson, Lebanon and Woodstock. They said most of the accidents involved burns and eye injuries.

In Montana on Saturday, a 32-year-old man was killed at a Billings home in a fireworks accident involving a mortar tube.

And in New Jersey, a 52-year-old man blew off a large piece of his left leg below the knee when he set off a tennis-ball sized firework in Leonia.

Traumatic brain injury most likely. Conservation of momentum. Takes a lot of force to get that mortar she'll hundreds of feet into the air.

We had a new guy at work last Christmas, I did his interview. He has the best resume I've ever seen, I get along with the guy and we hire him. First couple of weeks go well.

We get 2 weeks of for Xmas on our site, I missed the first day back sick. On the Tuesday I get back and don't see the new guy (no big deal I think) then one of my guys says yeh it sucks what happened to Jim (not real name). I'm like what? Turns out new years eve he was letting off fireworks and a homemade pipe bomb blew his hand to pieces. Had to chop it off it was so far gone. It made the news, he got let off charges because of injuries he sustain, he was essentially trying to let off a home made bomb on the beach and ducked it up. His toddler kid was there when it happened
