I just watched MoS for the first time since the theater. I kept thinking about everyone was talking about how Superman destroyed Metropolis When watching this again, it seemed to me that at least 95% of the destruction was caused by the world changing machines. Their fight did take out maybe a dozen building but the majority of them were under construction or empty due to the evacuation due to the machines. Also, of those several building, Superman was literally punched through 4 I think it was.

I just can't seem to see why everyone blamed him.

Thoughts on this?

I think the big issue was that he didn't seem to try and save anyone. He at times pushed the fight into places causing damage instead of trying to reduce it. He also didn't actively try to save individual people. I can only recall one time he tried saving someone that wasn't Lois. He even left his mom alone with the bad kryptonians. Why they left her there instead of taking her hostage is problematic as well.

Of all the problems with the film, the damage wasn't the most damning thing imo.

How was he supposed to go after individual people? He was somewhere in the Indian Ocean (I think) while the majority of the destruction happened. The only time I recall him pushing towards a populated place was into Smallville and he seems to be so mad at the whole threaten mom thing that he wasn't thinking clearly at all.

Don't get me wrong, while I enjoyed the movie, the plot has more holes than swiss cheese. I just remember everyone complaining about that a lot and it looks like they may be going that route for the reason Batman is pissed in the next one. Thanks for responding.

I think the damage talk was people just trying to express why this Superman was just off. I recall people complaining about a lot of things. Myself included.

My opinion of the film is not as glowing as a lot of peoples.

I can assume some reasons why it went the way it did and some of them make enough sense. but iirc Snyder and Goyer weren't even on the same boat regarding the actual representation for some of the events that occurred. I felt the main outcry was a culmination of things.

A lot of things were problematic for people. I mean, were asking why Superman didnt save people. The answer is that the screenplay wants us to hinge the idea on a 30 year jesus savior analog that didn't have his shit together.

Let's not forget that grown ass Superman completely destroys a dudes truck because he was embarrassed. That's damage caused directly by Superman.

I loved the truck thing lol. I took it as though he destroyed his truck because he was angry at that pile of trash guy, but couldn't hit him so took it out on his truck.

Superman's version of punching the wall when angry.

Lol.

Well that's cool and all. I imagine the reaction they were going for was how you felt about the scene.

Perhaps it contributed to the general opinion that Superman wasn't being heroic and generally just a selfish dude. ItCertainly didn't help that theres only like one other short scene of him helping a stranger as superman. I think hitchcock was a bit more heroic as an alcoholic than this Superman. Which is kinda crazy.

Idk. I'm not a person who complained much about the disaster porn. I thought the fight scenes were cool. To me the action was the only saving grace. I just didn't think it was a very good Superman movie or movie in general for that matter.

I'm in total agreement OP. This was almost pre Superman he was a kid in his first fight of his life. He was just trying to survive, if he hadn't done what he did EVERYONE would have died on the whole planet. People forget that. I love MOS I think it's a fantastic new version of Superman and Cavill is superb.

I understand enjoying the film but the light in which you seem to hold it, Rduk, has been a major point of contention for me.

So much of this film is hallow motioning towards substance that simply isn't there. It's classical music piped into McDonalds as an attempt to make the food better. Sure I like McDonalds for what it's worth but fantastic? We have vastly different palletes in that case.

I don't wanna hijack the thread with that debate, so I'll say that I also, for the most part, agree that the disaster porn is not terrible. Or what makes Man Of Steel a poor film.

My favorite part of the film, outside of the chick kicking ass, was the very subtle and perhaps unintentional symbolism of Plato's Republic in Kyrptonian society.

Megatron Robinson @MRobinson overall, I think I enjoyed the movie and it was probably the best superman movie in a long time, especially action wise, but I have to agree that there were several things in it that bothered while watching, which is rare for me.

Hijack away, won't bother me lol. Side note, this is why the site is better than others, on the og I would have already been called several names. On here, there's discussion and that's fantastic. Thanks.

I thought it was ok, but it didn't satisfy me in the way i was hoping it would. I definitely did not care for all of the product placement in the movie. I liked the fight sequences for the most part, but a large portion of the movie left me slightly put off.

Agreed

We've gone back and forth enough to know we won't move on our positions.

Unless someone really wants to hear my issues and opinion on the film again, I'll let this be a dead butterfly and move on.

I thought the pacing was off but I liked the movie. I'm a Superman fan though.

The truck thing wasn't really that out if character. We've seen every iteration of young/teen Clark Kent suffer with frustration at having to hold back from displaying his powers. Remember the YouTube vid of that little bucktoothed Aussie kid punching the bigget fat kid? Fat kid was in no danger but powerbombed the little brat and almost crippled him. No one blamed him for retaliating. MR is holding young Clark to too high a standard IMO.

Regarding the destruction of buildings - wat? You've never had a fight in your life and suddenly some alien soldiers turn up, take you into space and strap you to a table and fuck with your mind, threaten your mother, threaten your PLANET, start beating you up (including a train in the face), shooting you with alien lasers, start terraforming the planet, you fly across the planet and battle more alien technology while your city is being destroyed, come back and fight the experienced and battle tested general....

....and you're expected to keep every single person safe.

Mark, just admit you hate Superman. It's cool, you are allowed to do that. It would make much more sense than your vitriol at MOS.

Leigh, I'm disappointed you in here. I'm a huge Superman fan. You know that. Cmon.

You say young Clark destroyed the truck but he was already old. 30.

I know you've read my opinion on the film before. I wrote maybe 10000 words about it on the gg. My issue is not the common disdain for the film. A stronger screenplay could have resolved the destruction issues with a few sentences.

I barely give a damn about that and have never joined the cries against it. I do think it contributes to weakening of the film as a whole but that is not a major point of contention for me.

Loved that movie and I used to fucking hate superman. The only thing I liked from him was The Dark Knight returns and when Doomsday killed his ass. Now, I'm firmly on team Supes in the movie world at least. Though I read a theoretical study of the final scene am they reckkon 130,000 died in the final battle. Something I bet BatFleck isn't to chuffed about.
