THAT WOMAN DESERVES A FUCKING MEDAL

jesus! I did not expect this to be any good at all, or to be stuck to it, watching the whole thing - thought it would be a dumb shit fluff job, but oh my god, she rightly let herself go and the editing was obviously brave. fair play.

Came to say I wouldn't watch a fluff piece but after reading the comments, I checked it out and it was pretty good.

The scene with his daughters talking about him finally squeezing thier hands... Yeah, glad he survived for his familys sake.

Seeing the place where he was hit by the train though, how could you possibly not see that train coming? Makes me think that perhaps he was being an absolute idiot trying beat the train or he tried to commit suicide.

I am willing to guess. and the atmosphere around Matt, seems ok for me to say...

I think option 1. i think he went full jock and tried to beat the train, because he was very confident in his abilities and the performance of his car.

Cliff notes for those of us who think Hughes is a piece of shit and won't sit through an entire video of him? Do they talk about him being a massive piece of shit?

Yes. That is basically the theme of it.

That wasn't my take on it. It was touched upon but the theme to me was the accident and his recovery. The divorce and TRO's were not in this also.

I always tell people the same thing who say this or that athlete is a selfish asshole. That's usually what it takes to achieve at the highest level. They just aren't the best people to be around. They have one focus, themselves. How many times have we seen fighters say I'm fighting for my family or something close? If I were a betting man I would bet against those guys. The edge in many cases seems to have been lost. I can name some of the nicest guys in the gym and you would all know them. Only one was a world champion and when he moved to another organization he didn't have the same success. The stoned faced assholes on the whole are usually more successful.

Matt from what has been written and I have never met the guy seems to have been a bit of an asshole. Post accident he has gotten violent according to his wife and brother and I have no reason to doubt them. if you haven't seen the video I urge you to watch it as it shows a different side to him. Humans are complex creatures and there are many sides to us all.

i looked at a google map of the accident when it happened, there's lots of crossings like that where I grew up.

100% he thought he could beat the train.

hang on wait, he's now divorced? great fucking news for the lady, if so.

^tbf if a documentary shows the subject being an asshole, that is so unusual, it does become the focus of the whole thing

Why don’t you just take 15 minutes and watch it like the rest of us did. The focus was on his recovery. His wife mentioned 30 seconds of him being an asshole. I in no way thought that 30 seconds made the entire thing about him being asshole despite I myself knowing that he is.

should add that the mini-doc adds two points that support my guess.

1) driving someone else's truck
2) hauling diesel fuel

not familiar with the vehicle, a load that sloshes on cornering or acceleration...the train you thought you could beat is the train that beats you.

I also thought being it wasn’t his truck he may have been unfamiliar with what it’s capable of and misjudged the speed of the train.

lolwat why don't you take 15 seconds and read my first post. PWN3D

in terms of time, yes, lots of time was taken on his recovery. but in terms of the characterisation, the most telling and poignant bits were seeing how harshly this sweet woman has been taken for granted - and Matt is displayed as being fully responsible, previously unapologetic, and only now apologetic for his asshole actions, now he's in a diminished physical state.

ok dude, you watched it and noted all the equipment in the hospital going *ping*, ^ that is what I learned from the video.

they also said he was delivering diesel to different farms. Probably filled up a 100g transfer tank and then did fuel drops to fields and farms.
those transfer tanks are wicked, because they hit harder at half tank than they do when they're full.

lots of folks dump their truck hauling diesel in the far ditch making a left turn. Everything slides back when you pull out and then hits the passenger side when you turn. Rear wheels break loose and off in to the ditch you slide.

That part was weird. It seemed like he didn't have enough to do on his own farm and wanted to do anything and everything to get out of his house. I didn't understand why he was going to different farms with diesel. Aren't there delivery services? The bigger picture is I know some married guys and while they will hang onto their family, they do anything and everything not be around them which usually means they throw themselves into their work. I believe that was Matt. When divorce was forced upon them everyone one of them after it was over seemed more relieved. They just don't realize it while they are in it.

I have, from the get go, believed that Matt just tried to beat the train which seems TOTALLY in character for him...

There must be an interview somewhere from the train conductor. I would be curious as to his/her take on it.

yeah...hauling diesel is a summer job for the 14 yo neighbor kid, not a gig for a retired UFC fighter.
