It’s official. Michael Chandler is coming to the UFC.

The three-time Bellator lightweight champion has officially signed with the promotion according to UFC President Dana White, who announced the news on ESPN’s SportsCenter on Thursday. Chandler, 34, entered free agency after fighting his last fight for Bellator this past August.

White added that Chandler will serve as a potential replacement for either UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov or challenger Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 24.

For years, Chandler (21-5) has been widely regarded as one of the best lightweights competing outside of the UFC. He successfully defended Bellator’s 155-pound title six times across three separate reigns and holds notable wins over Benson Henderson (twice), Eddie Alvarez, Brent Primus, and Patricky Freire among others.

Is he that good? To be taking that slot?

Can’t wait to hear the crying from everyone else

Of course he's "that good", but he only has to be a good replacement stylistically, which he is.
UFC controls all narratives, so regardless if whether or not it actually happens, the house wins.
Hopefully both guys remain healthy, but Chandler is a good alternative.

I could list all the Pride/WEC/StrikeForce/Bellator guys who came to the UFC and did well, but I don't have all day.

It happens. A lot. Nobody gives a shit/remembers as long as they have UFC gloves on when they do it.

Could I see a list of guys who won titles in those organizations and then went on to win non-interim UFC titles? I don't think it'll take all day. Off the top of my head I've got Shogun and Rockhold.

Anyone bother to tell Pitbull that the guys who would normally be backups already have fights or nah?
Who?
Ferguson, Conor, and Poirier are currently not booked. It’s more likely none of them would train and wait around for a potential backup spot.

Are you trying to make the case that the UFC will throw nobody's into title shots...? 🤔
I'm not trying to make a case, they will. They once signed a guy in order to give him a title shot. They pulled Anderson Silva off of the fucking autograph table when JBJ popped.

Ferguson is supposed to be fighting Poirier and Conor is retired.
Currently Ferguson and Dustin is off. Negotiations fell through and Dana won’t pay Dustin what he wants. UFC said today they’re in talks with Conor for an early 2021 fight.
Point is those 3 guys aren’t gonna sit around and wait as a fill in. They want to fight on scheduled guaranteed payday. The UFC hardly has ever announced an official backup plan. By doing this they can basically claim to have a backup ready as well a introduce Chandler to the UFC fans for the next few weeks.

With Khabib's history I'd love to be a backup for one of his fights as long as a title is involved.
