A high-profile lightweight contest between two top contenders has been scrapped, as Michael Chiesa (14-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) has been forced to withdraw from UFC Fight Night 91.

MMAjunkie today confirmed with UFC officials that the promotion is now seeking a replacement opponent for Tony Ferguson (20-3 MMA, 10-1 UFC) willing to step in on a little more than two weeks’ notice.

Ferguson is currently ranked No. 3 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA lightweight rankings, while Chiesa checks in at No. 10.

UFC Fight Night 91 takes place July 13 at Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. The main card airs live on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sport 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Well that sucks. You know Chiesa hated dropping out of that one; this was a big opportunity for him.

man, i feel bad for both of these guys.

hopefully they can find El Cucuy an opponent. I'll take anyone at this point just to keep him on the card and have him staying active.

Lucky for him, Ferguson was likely going to chew him up. Sucks though it would have been a scrap.

Good. Was a bad fight. If Chiesa pulled off the upset, it eliminates a contender and forces a guy who isn't really a serious threat at that level into the mix.

Will Brooks?
I'd like to see that, but I was listening to brooks on Ariel and he said he originally wanted a big fight but his management team asked him to think about it as he has not fought in a while and should probably consider a warm up fight against a tough opponent but not top 5......
