"It's the superfight everyone wants. I think TJ (Dillashaw) and I are both on board. We just want to make sure it's on a stacked card. We want to make sure we can benefit from a good pay-per-view buy. I think I deserve it, and I think he deserves it."

"I'd rather have somebody else [be the] main event, who is going to bring in way more PPVs," Johnson said. "In my opinion, that's held up the fight on my end.

"I've seen guys jump on [stacked] PPV cards and make $1.5 million, fighting an inferior opponent than who I'm about to fight. Me and TJ could fight on a smaller card and pull 275,000 buys, get an extra check for $75,000. My management told me, 'You know what, we'll hold out for a big event.'

"A lot of media and fans think that's a way of turning down fights or ducking someone, but that's a way of being a smart businessman and getting the most money you can get. ... I'll wait for that opportunity, because in that one card, I'll basically make more money than three fights -- a year and a half of my life -- [combined]."

Johnson wants stacked card to fight Dillashaw

He wants someone else to be the headliner. An acknowledgement of what the numbers have shown: the flyweights can't carry a card.

This seems like an odd thing to say. From an old write up...

“He didn’t want Pay-Per-View,” White told TMZ. “He wanted upfront money, no Pay-Per-View. He wasn’t very confident in his abilities to sell Pay-Per-Views. He has the lowest-selling Pay-Per-View in the history of the UFC in the modern era.”

“The media claims he’s the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world,” the UFC President said in another portion of the interview. “I think Conor McGregor is the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world. If you look at what that really means, what pound-for-pound means, and Conor doesn’t give a sh*t, he’ll fight anybody, anywhere, anytime. And if Demetrious is the pound-for-pound best guy in the world, then fight T.J. Dillashaw. Fight somebody that people will actually care about and be interested in, and there you go.”

Dana White Slams Demetrious Johnson For Having 'Lowest-Selling Pay-Per-View' Buys In Modern UFC History

Hopefully DJ fins a way to get some $$$.

Tyron did the same thing. There is nothing wrong with it, because ppv buys are always talked about so it has become part of the business.

Also, the Conor cards that did tremendously well were pretty stacked. Iirc one had Faber headlining the prelims, and the others had a bunch of good names on the ppv.

There is no reason why this should not be part of the negotiation given the way they have structured the business.

There's nothing wrong with it until too many fighters insist on being part of a stacked card (Cyborg just made the same demand -- she'll agree to fight Amada Nunes but only on a stacked card). Either the UFC cannot accommodate all of the fighters' demands or the company will have a few insanely good PPVs each year and a bunch of other mediocre or terrible cards, on paper at least.

DJ has headlined 4 PPV's? Average buy rate is 140k.

Conor has headlined 5 PPV's? with an average buy rate of 1.2million....

how about those numbers!!

Tough to call the shots when you're not making the company dump trucks of money.

To solve this problem, put all those fighters in one card. Super stacked, everyone win.

If the champ won't defend his belt (for whatever reason, including money), strip him and give it to somebody else who WILL defend it.

This is ridiculous. Why would you want to give complete power to any organization? You think the UFC is going to willingly pay fighters a fair or healthy amount out of good will? What of they want to force an opponent on you who for some reason you feel isn't worth it? Let's say they gave PED violations, known to be dirty, aren't in top 5-10. There's all kinds of reasons why a negociation process is there, if anything the fighters should have more power. Of course champs should be expected to defend but saying "If the champ won't defend his belt (for whatever reason, including money), strip him" is nuts.

Strangely brutally honest, and should quickly dispel the "was ducking TJ" myth.

He's right, he should be getting paid. The bigger the PPV the more sells it gets, more he makes. WME has no marketing or promoting ability at all, great as Hollywood agents but they are out of their element in MMA, lesser fighters have been getting paid more, he has defended his title an insane double digit times and counting, he's more than put in his dues, he is right.

What can I say?
Joe Rogan TOWERS over him.
I hope he gets his dough, surely.
Fighters & managers are finally doing what they should have for years.
The UFC reaped the benefits of treating people like shit, underpaying them & selling overpriced when sued.
He's gotta do what he can to make his dough unless he can beat everyone's ass on the card or act like a nutjob & grab attention.

Realistically with the number of champions out there, you could have 4 cards in the year with 3 championship fights on each.

MM makes a good point, about wanting to get paid on a stacked card...but he should have put the heat on Dana for it.

"the only way Dana can sell a FLW fight is to stack the card with HWs, so put a bunch of shit-talkers and HWs on the card so I can get paid what my skills warrant"
