Stipe Miocic: Brock Lesnar’s ‘disrespectful’ appearance at UFC 226 was a ‘sh*t show’

Stipe Miocic let Daniel Cormier and Brock Lesnar have their moment at UFC 226. But that doesn’t mean he was cool with it.

A titanic matchup between Miocic and Cormier at UFC 226 — which ended in light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier knocking out Miocic to add the heavyweight title to his collection — was arguably overshadowed by the post-fight craziness that saw former UFC champion and current WWE star Brock Lesnar enter the cage at Cormier’s behest.

Lesnar and Cormier briefly became physical before engaging in some verbal back-and-forth, with UFC president Dana White later saying that he expected the two to fight soon. It was a classic piece of pro-wrestling style fight promotion, but lost in all that was the fallen champion who dutifully left the cage as that scene was going on.

Speaking to ESPN on Monday, Miocic made his thoughts brutally clear on the matter.

“It was a sh*t show and it was disrespectful,” Miocic said. “I didn’t think that was what the UFC was all about.”

Miocic is known for being one of the more soft-spoken stars in MMA, so it wasn’t surprising that he chose not to get involved with Cormier-Lesnar shenanigans. However, that doesn’t mean he wanted to stay completely silent; in fact, he expected to have the opportunity to say his piece before Lesnar became involved.

“I thought they were going to interview me [after the fight] and I was going to ask for a rematch,” Miocic said. “When Brock came in, I said, ‘I’m out of here, I don’t need this circus.’ How can you give a guy a title shot who hasn’t fought in over two years, is suspended, and his last fight is a no-contest because he was taking PEDs?”

Despite Miocic’s objections (he told ESPN that he is only interested in an immediate rematch with Cormier), it looks like the gears are in motion for Lesnar, who will not be eligible to compete until January as he continues to pay the price for his past drug-test failures, to fight Cormier next. That’s a tough pill to swallow for Miocic given that he recently set the record for the most consecutive successful UFC title defenses (3) when he defeated Francis Ngannou at UFC 220.

He believes the UFC will do anything to pop a pay-per-view buy rate, even if it means giving a prime main event slot to a fighter who technically has not won a fight since July 2010 (Lesnar’s unanimous decision nod over Mark Hunt at UFC 200 on July 9, 2016 became a no-contest due to a pair of failed drug tests).

“I want a title shot. I deserve it,” Miocic said. “[Lesnar] hasn’t fought in how long? For him to get a title shot, as I get thrown to the side? It just seems like they are desperate for pay-per-views.

”I cleaned out the division. I defended it more than anyone, and you’re gonna tell me I don’t deserve a chance to get it back? Get out of here. Kiss my ass if you don’t think I deserve that.”

As for where he stands with White, the UFC’s mastermind who undoubtedly played a part in orchestrating the theatrics and stands to gain plenty from a Lesnar return, Miocic’s interaction with him in the aftermath has been almost non-existent.

“It was like a two-second conversation, he apologized for everything that happened in the cage,” Miocic said. “I just said, ‘Whatever.’ The apology didn’t mean anything. That’s what they want to happen.”

He has every right to feel that way.
DC should have told Joe to come back (to him) after talking to Stipe or at lease DC should have put over Stipe.

Obviously Brock was there to challenge the winner, but he did not step foot in the Octagon until DC jumped the gun

It also shows that Stipe was not told that Brock was coming in the Octagon.

If he won, you know Brock would not have pushed him lol

Brock knew DC would play along.
Stipe might KO him :leftright:

MMA fans are very much a "what have you done for me lately" group of people. Stipe was the GOAT UFC HW before the fight started. More consecutive title defenses than any UFC champion in history!! The second he got dropped, they didn't even want toalk to him.

'The biggest fight in UFC history' is always the next one. He's right to be upset with how it went down, but if he's shocked then he's foolish.

Stipe was going to get the mic, but DC went off & asked Brock to come in.
That is on DC
Brock was outside waiting
It turned out a lot more disrespectful to Stipe than planned.
Do I think UFC cares? No
When Stipe said he hated doing the promotion they had lined up for him & didn't want to do it, that sealed the relationship.

I have mixed feelings
Stipe was my fav current HW before the fight & it would be great to see him get the Brock $$$ if he won.
but DC deserves that payday too & will work the media for it & his story is a great one.

Just sucks Stipe was cast aside like that, but after DC grabbed the mic there was no putting the toothpaste back in the tube

We have criticized the UFC in the past for having interviews done of fighters that were just ko'd. I didn't like the Brock thing at all - I did find it tasteless and disrespectful to Stipe and the heavyweight division in general - but the other aspect of not interviewing Stipe I am ok with...so mixed on this one.

Not sure how many fights he had left on his contract, but Stipe’s career may be done. He wasn’t a great draw and doesn’t seem to put up with the shit. I could see him saying fuck it and just keep on fighting fires.

The only way he gets a rematch is if he’s called in on short notice because someone is injured or gets caught with kangaroo meat.

I think he would like to prove he is really the best & will continue.

Agreed. You kind of don’t get to the place he was at two weeks ago by being a quitter. Though maybe he’s made enough money to make it less of an issue. One things for, DFW/UFC doesn’t give a shit about anyone if they’re not bringing in the profits.

It sucks for him, but he'll probably never get the DC rematch.

Sorry, but the UFC's main objective is the maximize revenue, and throwing Brock in there means way more money for all involved.

I feel for him, but it's not like it was a close fight - he got KO'd in the first round.

You cant tell me fighters are still this dense in this age.

YES Stipe. The UFC is ALL about PPV's and money

Happy to clear that up for ya.

Geez
A few thoughts on that.
Stipe isn't dumb, but when he admitted publicly he hated doing the media UFC set up for their champion, it made it obvious he was not thinking of things from a business perspective.
If he doesn't think that way about his own brand, he won't for the company.
He knows deep inside why things occur. But he is smart enough to know that by voicing that opinion that some will rally behind him.

He has every right to feel the way he does. I just wish he would have thought more about his brand so he could have banked more than he did.
He was/is a great champ & I think he will be back.

Don't get me wrong. I really like Stipe and what Brock did was bullshit.
It just surprises me that fighters are surprised when the UFC allows them to
be treated like garbage.

Like how many times does it take for your girlfriend to sleep with
all your friends before you realize maybe she's not your girlfriend
and is most likely the town ho.

I agree with the thought but he's going about it all wrong just like all the other fighters do.
He gets fucked over by the the UFC, then he goes out and whines about it by himself
with no call for collective action.

He should have went on that show calling for people to sign their Spearhead cards,
called for fighters to organize for collective action so they can actually have a say so.

He didn't though. He did what fighters always do.

Go on a show and bitch by themselves and nothing happens cuz the UFC
doesn't give a fuck. Its old

For whatever reason, it seems a lot of fighters do not back her.
Even pro union people

But I fully believe the reason fighters bitch on Ariel or Twitter is to play the "poor me" card & get the fans behind them that tend to "rage against the machine".
Its an easy card to play.

Stipe complains then says he is happy then complains & says he is happy
Wash - Rinse - Repeat

If Stipe was truly unhappy & believed in what Smith was doing, as HW champ he could have really helped.
But ..............

I agree with you. But what does the "poor me card" ever accomplish really?

The fans that rally are hardcores like us and the UFC doesn't care about
us either. They thumbed their nose at us a long time ago.

If all these fighters want is a "poor me pitty party" they won't get
one from me anymore. Do something about and I'll back them

Till then I don't care.

I'm with you 100%

I was just explaining why he & others seem to do the "poor me" without actually doing anything about it.

I hear ya. I guess I'm just fed up with fighters complaining over and over
and never doing anything about it. They can go cry on someone else's shoulder
cuz I don't wanna hear it anymore.

They can call me to back them when they are ready to actually do something about
the situation and I'll back them 1000%

Till then I got shit to do just like them

Yep...I think the Heels/lifts lesnar had were made to have a stare down with Stipe...They made him extra tall next to shorty DC

looked ridiculous IMO...I think Lesnar had 1.5+ inches of Xtra lift to make him seem bigger than Stipe

reminded me of Dana rocking those 2 inch lift shoes a few years back

We are definitely on the same page.

Outside of that there is a certain selfishness that I'm tired of. Fighters only
go on shows and complain when something happens to them personally.
They never stick up for each other.

Where was Stipe when Yair was getting rail roaded by Egg?

Where was he when JDS got USADA fucked?

Where was he when Egg told DJ he'd close the division unless DJ took the fight he wanted?

On and on and on... they never stick up for each other which is exactly why they
get the shaft from the UFC because they can't fight individually. They have to rally together.

And not to pick on Stipe. This applies to all of them
