Final Countdown is an awesome movie - very underrated.

As for this thread - are we talking soundtracks with regular songs that would play on the radio? Or movies with excellent scores?

If we're talking soundtracks:

American Graffiti
Rad
Blues Brothers
Pulp Fiction
The Big Chill
Top Gun
Flash Gordon
Dazed and Confused
Easy Rider
Boss Level

If we're talking scores:

Rocky (all of them)
Tron: Legacy
Rudy
Dark Knight
Star Wars
Pink Panther

I miss these. There is a difference between scores and soundtracks, btw. I love Guardians of the Galaxy but after everyone thought it was clever to mix the two now Hollywood uses actual songs as scores now.

The Exorcist without the score would not have the same effect. Say what you will about the ending not holding up but the score was eerie as hell and made the movie build up to the gore fest.

Of course, the original Star Wars scores were immaculate.

Honestly, as far as score there are many that would hit different without it.

Friday the 13th would be a completely different movie without that classic score.

It's amazing how much a score. Can elevate or let down a movie. Friday's simple one. Was so effective. It use to scare the hell out of me. I would also add Jaws would have been completely different. If not for it's iconic one also.

Too many to mention but my favorite composers are:
Jerry Goldsmith
Lalo Schifrin
Quincy Jones
Dimitry Tiomkin
Miklos Rozsa
Elmer Bernstein
John Williams (of course!)

Excellent list, but definitely needs Hans Zimmer.

And if the score to Tron: Ares is as good as it sounds like it might be, add Trent Reznor to the list, too.

Zimmer would be in my "second wave", more modern film composers like Alan Silvestri, James Horner, Michael Giacchino, et al. Ludwig Goransson, like Trent Reznor, is a rising star as well. Lotta love to Basil Poledouris if just for his iconic "Conan the Barbarian" and "RoboCop" themes.

It is an excellent list.
I'd add Basil & James Horner too.
& Ennio Morricone of course
