It's approaching 18 months since the MW title was defended against a legitimate top 5 opponent (since Weidman defended against Rockhold). The way things are looking, it will be 2 years before it happens, and that's if everything works out. There are multiple scenarios where it could be much longer.
People hate interim titles, but MW has too many top ranked fighters just treading water. They have nothing to aim for, they can only try and maintain their position.
And while it doesn't seem to make 'sense' that an interim title is created when the champion isn't injured, when has sense ever come into it. An interim title is good for the division because it gives it some direction, it's good for the fans because we have a reference as to who is the legitimate top 185er is, and WME can promote another main event with it. Everybody wins.
