My 12 year old daughter told me that she wants to get into Karate. She did Judo for about a year, but lost interest. That was a couple years ago. I’ve never done Karate or Taekwondo so I don’t really know what to look for. I want her to have fun, learn some shit, and get a decent workout. She’s also pretty clumsy, so I hope they could work on that. What should I be looking for so I don’t end up with her trying to throw Chi Balls at a George Dillman school? Thanks.

Madison, Wi. West side near Middleton. There is a chain of karate schools here called Infinity Martial Arts. They look to be sport karate. Their Middleton dojo looks amazing from the outside. I’m planning on checking it out this week.

Cool!
Is your area fully open in regards to ‘rona restrictions?

Still have to mask up. Although I do hot yoga and they have maskless classes for vaxed. I also do spin classes and everyone takes off their masks. I’m guessing karate classes will have masks on.

Just go watch a class, and you will very quickly be able to figure out if they are teaching no touch knockouts or traditional karate with katas etc

Do I want them doing katas?
Debatable, but in karate schools I think you pretty much have to choose between katas or no-touch knockouts. A decent karate school should have katas/forms (needed for tradition), and hopefully live sparring

What the fuck!

I am disappointed but not surprised I have to be the one to bring it up.

Fwiw I learned all my karate from jean Claude van Damme movies. Found them way more helpful than shitty classes.

I can make a list of movies for her to watch if you like?

If not see if you can find.that kyokushin karate, I seen those motherfuckers fighting trees on tv, looked pretty tough. Also I think it's the karate lucky Pierre did.

Not gonna lie. She and I watched this and it inspired her to join. She wants to be like Tori. Her friend wants to join with her so she will have a fellow newb to train with.

Try to go for either traditional Shotokan or modern Kyokushinkai aka Oyama karate.

I did Oyama and it's the one where they emphasize toughness, getting whacked with kicks on legs and even head, only thing not allowed is punches to the face. It maybe a bit much for a girl but they provide good structure and you learn proper kicking and punching techniques.

Both styles do katas as well, however in Shotokan there are more katas and they are executed much quicker.

I know Cobra Kai has plans to expand. I'm not sure how long it will take for them to reach Madison (Cobra Kai is a west coast organization). They just recently took the all around championship in the All Valley Tournament, and they trained the current girl's champ so their techniques are effective with females.

sorry
