Are ads that bothersome?
I don't mind ads but thanks for sharing!

How about they get rid of the phone and give me a real phone with as many ads as possible, anything is less punishment than an android

Or if you root your phone you can install AdAway from the F-Droid store. It will block all ads served to the device, including in-apps ads.

It's not so much that they are bothersome, it's the fact that malware payloads and site redirects are becoming a problem. This helps prevent those things.

While this is an option, I just don't see a benefit to rooting android phones anymore.

I just like to have full control of my device. It's the main reason I switched from iPhone. Plus there's no other way to block ads globally other than to rewrite your network hosts file as the root user. I fucking HATE advertisements, so it's worth it for that alone. But on top of that, your custom ROM options are severely limited without root.

Rooting, if nothing else, allows you to delete bloatware and create back ups.

I also use it for quite a few things, including custom ROMs, mapping my Android folder to my SD card, removing soft keys keys and clock modification

Having used/owned both iOS and Android devices, my opinion is Android is superior in most areas. Apple devices are a bit easier to use when starting out. Android offers far more customization (true root access) and some devices beat Apple's products in specs/quality. You have the ultra cheap Android devices and the real high-end beautiful devices. And of course, Android is open source. In this day and age, I would not trust closed source programs/devices if possible. What really gets me is Apple is in a constant war with jailbreakers. It's my device, I bought it I should be able to customize it as I see fit. Why not just offer a jailbreaking solution even if it has to void the warranty?

I'm not necessarily a savvy phone user but the thing drives me insane

Yes even iOS was hit with some jailbreak malware not too long ago. I had a rooted tablet and was drunk playing games and gave this Chinese app root access and when I turned it on the next day there were over 50 apps installed lol.

My parents use Androids (Galaxy S4) and they don't even know the difference between wifi and 3g/4g. They dont seem to have any problems but they just use it for email/call/text some web browsing. What device was giving you trouble?

In the next version of iOS (out next week I think), Safari will have support for extensions like Adblock so if you're looking to get rid of ads you'll be able to stick with Safari which is a good thing as it's ridiculously quicker compared to 3rd party browsers on iOS.

Adblock's a weird thing, it's sort of helped drive sites to actually get more aggressive with the ads and tracking and screw their sites up even worse for people who don't use it, but it definitely delivers a better experience to it's users. Well, except if you're browsing a site that's paid them to let their particular ads through.
