Bombs are difficult and mostly inefficient. Off the top of my head, they have been used in 4 high profile mass killings carried out by individuals (at least, 4 that come to mind).
* Oklahoma City
* Boston Marathon
* Breivik in Norway
* Columbine High
Oklahoma was the exception, but Tim McVeigh had a) explosives training in the military, and b) access to farmland and an accomplice whose status as a farmer allowed him to buy bulk quantities of explosive chemicals. Tarrant didn't have access to that.
* Boston Marathon, two bombs in a crowd of people, three fatalities.
* Norway - Breivik set up a fake company and spent months ordering chemicals online through that business, before testing on a rural property that he owned. His bomb worked perfectly and killed eight people - as opposed to the 69 that he killed with his guns.
* Columbine, two propane bombs were supposed to be the centrepiece of the attack. Neither detonated, because bombs are difficult. They brought dozens of bombs into the school and detonated a lot of pipe bombs, but every death and injury was from bullets.
Tarrant chose firearms because they were the most deadly equipment that he had access to, it's just as simple as that.
Same as his manifesto is full of grandiose statements about him being a brave warrior sacrificing himself to defend his people. When the reality is, he did it because:
* First and foremost, he was an incel with absolutely no social connections - no friends, no job, no girlfriend, no random hookups. Didn't even have furniture in his house or sheets on his bed, that's how socially isolated he was.
* he was radicalised by his entire "social life" being spent on a toxic shit posting board
* He had inherited over half a million dollars when his dad died a few years before. He used that primarily to travel. When he shot up the mosques, his money was only a few weeks away from running out and he didn't want to get a job after living for years with money but no obligations.
