What the fuck so it is real? You are not allowed to pump your own gas in some states? I thought it was an Onion article of sorts.

I am old enough that I remember full service gas stations, so it did not seem that weird to me in the 80’s when someone else always pumped our gas on the Jersey Turnpike. Pissed my dad off though.

What is the reason? Too dangerous? Because I have been pumping gas all my life and I never died before.
The official story in N.J. is that it was a concern about safety, but rumor is that it was a job protection issue that arose when the first self service stations opened. Unclear to me why it has never changed.

Do they still clean your windshield and have you sign a credit card slip on a little clipboard they pass through your window?
Usually, you get out to swipe your card, or just hand the card to them and let them do it for a credit card. They'll clean your window if you ask. Tips are expected in that case.

One time in my 18 years of driving I drove off with the gas pump still in my car, but there's a safety mechanism in the hose to prevent any damage in these cases.

The gas station employee just re-watched it in seconds and I was on my way.

yep

some make you swipe your own

that is really silly cause then the pumper has nothing to do at all

illegal to start the gas pumping....but legal to put it away after
But then if they swipe for you that means you have to give them your zip code?

Isn't that a bit of a security risk?

So people are flocking away from Oregon now to find luck elsewhere? :)
I think it was some sort of job thing back in the day...mostly convict looking dudes and "i can't work for myself type of people" IMO

good folks but they just seem to want' to hang around fumes and pump gas for min wage I guess.

Might affect our price of fuel...I dunno

Not in N.J. or Oregon; now just N.J.
It's only in Eastern OR (very rural) counties, and it's optional. It also doesn't apply to gas stations with a garage or convenience store.
It's actually always been the law that they can do it from 6PM - 6AM, this just makes it a 24 hr deal.

dumbest thing in a state chock full of dumb things.

the 'reason' is that people top off their tanks and spill gas in to the pristine waterways of Oregon, or don't turn their gas caps through the 'click' to ensure that the vapor recovery system is working.

It's really just a make-work program that has the added benefit of making driving in Oregon suck a little more.
Nothing like sitting in line to get your gas pumped for 20m, only to wait 10 more for the dipshit to come over and hang up the nozzle.
