Last month, B.J. Penn suffered the first submission loss of his legendary MMA career, tapping to a wicked heel hook from leglock specialist Ryan Hall at UFC 232. It was Penn’s sixth consecutive loss, which prompted UFC president Dana White to say he wants to see “The Prodigy” retire.

Well if you came here expecting a statement from Penn that he is retiring for good, that’s not happening. He told Chris Taylor on BJPenn.com that he’s going to wait until his ankle is healthy again before making his next decision.

“I just got back home to Hawaii,” Penn said. “I’m going to let my ankle heal up and then I will contemplate what is next for my life.”

Penn called Hall’s submission “a perfect storm,” as he…

Hoping he hangs them up at this point. Doesn’t need the money, nothing left to prove. But he was born to fight, so who knows. He may get the itch again in 6 months.

He really should have been put out to pasture after the Siver loss, but at least Dana White seems on board now (I know Dana White Says A Lot of Things). Hopefully the UFC realizes how much the downside outweighs any upside here.

Hate to say it but Dana needs to give BJ a fight against a savage

Let him get absolutely beat to a pulp and hopefully, maybe...just maybe BJ
will get it through his thick head that he's fucking done

Hang it up man. Go find your life's other passions and move on

    Geez

I get that, but I really think he's been all used up at this point, even before this point. And in the Zuffa era I was actually much more likely to criticize the UFC for the opposite, for not giving certain fighters an extra chance.

But it undermines the promotion's credibility when they do shit like this. Maybe not with casuals, who don't pay attention very much, but with the hardcore fans for sure, and what's moreand I really don't think WME gets thisthe hardcore fans are disproportionately important. They're the ones who are much more likely to be in it for the long haul, through thick and thin, as long as the product is good, who will go out of their way to watch second and third-tier headliners, and who are the most likely to try and convert their friends, and also the most likely to spend a huge chunk of change to see the fights in person.

WME should not only be trying to pander more to the hardcore fans, they should be growing that fanbase, particularly if they wanna keep growing the sport and getting more money. How many active players does your average NBA or NFL or MLB season ticket holder know about on a deep level? It's dozens. The "hardcore" fanbase in those sports is completely gigantic and self-reinforcing. The flip side of that is that scandals like deflate-gate, or using incompetent referees or during a strike, or home run record breakers pissing hot can do a lot more near-term damage than the scandals in MMA.

Putting a way-past-his-prime B.J. Penn in the ring isn't nearly as bad as having to admit that the reason they're moving an entire card to another state on 6 days' notice is because Jon Jones pissed hot but we're still letting him fight, but it's still ugly, and the sort of thing that shoots themselves in the foot to pop a slightly higher prelim rating.

Penn is a promising young up and coming fighter. I hope they don't push him to fast and let him have time to develop.

They let him lose 6 straight, a UFC record, and pay him more than 80% of the roster. They recognize the potential for sure.

I really hope a submission loss does that. It should.
