I wish this headline was made up but its not.

Yesterday it was announced that the Régie des alcools des courses et des jeux (the Quebec Athletic Commission) revoked the licence of MMA fighter Khetag Pliev.

As previously discussed, on March 18, 2015 the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport conducted an out-of-competition doping test in Toronto, ON. The test was positive for Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone, an anabolic agent prohibited by WADA standards.

Pliev admitted to the doping violation and accepted a 4 year period of ineligibility by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. The suspension commenced on the date of sample collection, March 18, 2015, and concludes on March 18, 2019. The full suspension decision can be found here.

Despite this Plieve was licensed in Quebec and defeated his opponent, Francis Charbonneau, via first round stoppage at TKO 39 in 2017.

Now Quebec has decided to revoke Pliev’s licence. TKO published the following on their website. –

Montreal, Quebec (Canada), Wednesday January 17th 2018 – Earlier today, the Régie des alcools des courses et des jeux, Quebec’s governing body for combat sports, has submitted to the TKO office a decision in which it was determined that Khetag Pliev’s license to compete has been revoked due to his failure to fully disclose information on his original license application.

Pliev was suspended in June 2015 by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sports (CCES) following a doping violation. The suspension is in effect until Mach 18th, 2019 – however Pliev did not provide this information when applying for a license to compete at TKO39. As such, the Quebec athletic commission has revoked his license effective immediately. Pliev will only be allowed to re-apply for a license to compete in Quebec once his suspension with the CCES is over (March 18th, 2019).

Despite the above, the commission has not changed the result of his TKO39 fight with Francis Charbonneau.

And then Justin Trudeau cried.

Is anyone surprised? There needs to be a legitimate national governing body over MMA to ensure best standards and practices for the U.S., Canada and any other country that wants to develop and legitimize the sport. It does not have to be a government agency.
