I was under the impression you thought the standards should be that SCOTUS positions not be given out when heading into an election. Am I mistaken?
Gray area. From a right/wrong standpoint, I believe the sitting POTUS should not bat an eye at fulfilling their duties in the moment. That said, all parties and considerations of the present moment aside, I “wish” we were in a place as a nation where the SCOTUS would not have ANY considerations as to political affiliation. If we were doing what we should as a nation, no one should ever know what a Supreme Court justice’s political preferences are because their ONLY job should be to uphold the laws of the land.

Ah, so yes. I misunderstood, I apologize.

By the way, good post.

To be fully transparent, it would be exhausting to try and hash this out comment for comment. I just don’t like debating online. However, out of respect for you, I’ll answer that I rate informational sources based on my perception of their level of narrative and hypocrisy. It is clear most major news outlets are pushing for one side or the other, so I try to be judicious in fact vs position. IMO I see the vast majority of media outlets as biased towards the left, but that doesn’t make me think Fox et. al. are any better as a result. I don’t know if there is any such thing as an unbiased source of true journalism today so I look at multiple sources and make up my own mind on issues.
I agree it would be exhausting, so let me just get to the meat of the matter. Why do you believe anything in that campaign document is true? It doesn't source any of its claims, either through the media, through fact checking institutions, through policy analysts, through the Government Accountability Office or Congressional Budget Office or anyone else who analyzes spending or the economy. It just lists a bunch of bullets saying "we did this." What about that is credible or non-partisan?

Dude, you are getting WAAAY too far into the weeds here. Another poster asked for justification of anything Trump has done in 3.5yrs. There are literally thousands of articles commenting on positive changes he has been responsible for. I took the first of umpteen examples as a simple expression to provide his request for a “single” example. We don’t need to do a deep dive on the random example I chose. How about we just take a step back and acknowledge the record low unemployment rates for African Americans is a good thing and stop trying to turn a single online discussion into a term paper requesting citations. If you can’t acknowledge the past few years have a been a positive for the US particularly minority opportunity for advancement, I don’t think we need to go any further in this discussion. Respectfully.

I'm not sure how it's getting into the weeds. You said you picked this campaign document because it represents his accomplishments and that the media doesn't report them accurately.

As for minority unemployment, what was the record? How long was it at that record? Where is it now? What policies of Trump's affected it and how do you know they did? I'm not looking for a term paper. I'm asking what makes you hold up the claims in that particular document as credible. It seems like only through other sources could you establish whether that document was true at all.

For example, if you read the Democratic party platform, it claims credit for all of the good things that have happened in the past decade being the result of Democratic members of Congress, Democratic governors and the prior administration of Barack Obama.

So whose campaign documents do we believe and why if we don't have media and policy analysis to verify?

The GOP is trying to do the same thing the Dems tried to do in 2016 and all the arguments the Dems are making now were made by the GOP back then.

Same words.
Different talking heads.

Also - Can we do away with lifetime appointments?

It cracks me up how either side can try and take a principled stance here when both have argued the exact opposite of their position in the recent past. How anyone could take these clowns seriously is beyond me.

252 days is not 40 days, but ok.

The Dems need to revenge-porn a few Republican senators into not voting for the nominee. They have no legal or procedural recourse that can delay the appointment of whoever Trump chooses.

Why is it so bad that the seat gets filled? They uphold the law, not politics. Of course due to our corrupt government(Democrats & Republicans), I'm sure this is not the case.

People hate Trump, and don't want him to make lasting decisions.

The problem with that is:
  • A seat would be vacant.
  • There is no guarantee the senate will approve the nominee.
  • There is no guarantee Trump won't be in office following the upcoming election.
