I think the guy that made this call was my favorite ref, and he is the best ref, Marc Goddard but he fucked up here. Goddard was not reffing the fight but he was in a position to make the call cageside.

I actually think the right guy won, Ricky, I had him winning round 2 barely and round 3 clearly, so my issue is not with that.

First off, at no time was Merab out, even after the fight was over, he was not out, he just was tired and let his head sit on the canvas for a second or 2. Paul Felder fucked up saying he was out, he never was. Look at the camera, how the fuck are you out with your eyes wide open blinking over and over again.

Also, even if he was out it means nothing. The guy never stopped the fight ever, and that is what matters. The fight went the full 15 minutes, whatever you discover post fight is hot trash, it went 15 minutes. Even if you determine it should have been stopped and say Merab was indeed out, ref never stopped it and it went 15 minutes.

In the NFL, if you run a play, refs fucks up, and then you run another play, you can't go back 3 plays and say "this was the call, put them back on that part of the field". You only can do it if don't run another play.

Imagine 2 guys are fighting, it goes to a dec, Marc Goddard is looking at the replay and sees in his mind that one guy was ko'd in round2 but ref did not catch, imagine how absurd it would be to let it go 15 minute, then come back and call it a rd 2 ko for the other guy.

Right guy won the fight, but this was such a horrible call and make alarming given it was by I consider the best ref.

“The sole purpose of Instant Replay in MMA is to allow the referee to make a correct call on the outcome of the fight in calling,” the proposal from the rules and regulations committee to the ABC states"

ABC passes guidelines for instant replay use in MMA, more

I thought they used the replay to determine if Merab was out. With the instant replays in use now whatever you discover post fight isn't hot trash.

It is, it's besides the point if they discover post fight he was out earlier in the fight, the ref allowed the fight to go 15 minutes whether the guy was out in rd 1 , 2 or 3 means nothing.

Also, there is no time that it was clearly proven the guy was out, but again, it matters naught.

it was a horrible call by Goddard here

You make great points.. BUT the rule states that if a guy goes out the fight is over.. regardless if the bell rings... the guy was visibly wobbly on noodle legs when he went stand up and was assisted on pretty much falling on his back.. this rule applies in wrestling as well..idc if you're winning when the final buzzer goes off if you lose consciousness you lose.. they can't go to the judges if the fighter is not coherent at the buzzer or before. I know it's a gray area because of all the methods in which a fight can end... pretty much him laying there then not getting up on his own accord and taking a moment to respond after the buzzer.. then it was evident his legs were gone.. not to mention he acknowledged he was fine multiple times during the choke so when he was asked directly after the fight he was non responsive then came to and must have been confused... Goddard seen that he wasn't responding Like he had and that was the deal breaker.. many fighters go out but the fight is stopped inside the bell. Then the fighter comes back in a split second and will be in denial he was out.

They introduced instant replay for scenarios such as this. Saying discovering things after the bell doesn't matter is just ignoring the new rule or regulation in place. Shit call during the fight no doubt but I like the use of replays to determine this type of thing. Simon was down on the cards and needed the finish. If Goddard didn't make the right call in the end the wrong guy would've got the W and full pay which isn't cool.

Fwiw

“I think it was pretty clear at the end of the fight, maybe even before, when the bell sounded, Dvalishvili ... he was out,” Goddard said. “He was actually out. And in that instance, it’s like any other instance if you pick up a rear-naked choke or a guillotine. The fact that he drifts into unconsciousness was actually — it should be recorded as a submission, technical submission.”

For his part, Dvalishvili vigorously protested the commission’s decision, arguing that he was simply tired after the bout and never slipped into unconsciousness.

“[Simon] took me down and I couldn’t move. I just waited because there was only a short amount of time left,” Dvalishvili said. “When it was finished, I was just tired and stayed down. I knew I had won. The doctors told me to stay down. I don’t know why they gave it to him. I feel I’m the winner. I didn’t lose this fight.”

Simon, of course, disagreed with Dvalishvili’s assertion that he maintained consciousness. The UFC newcomer said post-fight that Dvalishvili “went limp” and “was out.”

And to that, Goddard agrees.

“There was a bit of confusion, it was loud, and I just wanted to make sure that they weren’t going to go to the scorecards, because that’s the way it looked like it was going to be heading,” Goddard explained. “But the referee Liam Kerrigan, to his credit, when he saw [Dvalishvili] was out, he actually waved it off. And I think there was a little bit of a rush, people thought we were going to try and read the scorecards, so I said, ‘No, no, no. The guy has lost the fight.’ Even though he came around pretty sharp afterwards, he most definitely lost the fight under the ruling and the right guy went away with the win.”

It's hilarious that anyone would put blame on Marc Goddard for that.

You tell me a fight where a guy defended a choke by letting his arms go limp and flailing his legs wildly.

The right man won so this whole thread is hot garbage IMO.

Wait a second, the fight went the distance.

So forget about the sub, say it was determined that in round 2 Ricky Simon briefly ko'd Merab, but the right missed it and then after the fight went the 15 minutes, it makes sense to you that Goddard could say "hey in rd 2 Merab was ko'd, so fight is called a tko finish by strikes by Simon.

Makse no sense. only makes sense if you went to replay while the fight was live, caught it before time ran out and then made the call.

The crux of the matter is that the ref allowed it go to go all 15 minutes, it is insane to then go back and make that call.

Also, at what point was it clearly proven without a doubt that Merab was out???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Not even that part was ever proven, shit call here, absolutely insane call by Goddard.

Hey troll, the fight went 15 minute and Merab was never out or at least never proven to be out. Look at his eyes when the fight was over, he was wide awake and blinking, and you must have never trained a day in your life. If your are out your eyes are not open and you are not able to make your legs move, do you not understand he made his legs move becuase he was awake.

Its a badge of honor that a troll like you sees it different, more proof to me that I got it right

The logic is insane. It was never proven he was out. If I am fighting a choke like that, once the round is over and I know its over I have every right to lie on my back. We all have eyes, the guys eyes where open and blinking, even if you think he went out you have to prove that. I myself would have lied down for a few seconds like Merab did because I finished the damn fight, there is no reason why I have to put up an act after the 15 minutes is up to convince anyone that I was not out. Just the sheer act of going 15 minutes way enough.

He was never out and even if you think he was, there was no proof

Also the point is moot because the guy went 15 minutes.

If you go back and watch a replay, lets say you saw Merab ko Ricky in rd 1 for a few seconds and the ref missed it then the fight goes on and the guy is allowed ti continue, do you think it is just to go back to round 1 and say Merab won by ko LOL

Goddard is not just a good ref, he is probably the best, but he is human and this was the worse call I think he made in his life.

it wasn't right

I would have no problem with the fight being stopped when he was not fighting the hands or arms

But victory via TKO at 5minutes 19 seconds of round 3 doesn't make any sense

DO you have to stand up after a fight to not be considered TKO?
If so how long must you stand?

whatever...it happened...its over

As usual you get it.

LOL at saying because he was lying down for a few seconds after the fight was OVER, that he was out. That's just unfair. If I am a fighter and I go 15 minutes, I should be allowed to not just lay down but fucking sleep with my eyes clsoed until the ref forces me up. Once you finish the fight, you finish the fight, its hot trash that Merab has to somehow convince the ref post fight.

This is one of the shittiest calls I have ever seen in MMA.

That was strikes and when the ref pulled Ben off last time I checked it was not after the 15 minutes where up.

Hmmm, when I google the fight on sherdog looks like the fight was stopped, with time left in the round.

Versus this poll, where a guy was never proven to have gone out, only people guessing he went out and the guy made it the full 15 minutes too.

LOL, not even close to the same, not saying you are saying it is the same fyi.

i dont blame goddard but i do blame the ref who let it go to the bell while dude was getting the life choked out of him for 45 seconds.the time to stop that fight was when his head was turning purple and he wasnt even fighting to get out. he just kicked his legs .zero attempt to fight hands or get out of a mounted position.there was ample time for the ref to step in. letting it go to the bell and then stopping it just allowed the guy to take maximum damage

Why would the ref stop the fight? The guy was never out, being in a bad position and being close being out is not the same as being out. Even if you think he was out, there was no way to prove it post fight. You can't fucking punish a guy for lying down after the fight is over. Whatever convincing I need to do as a fighter to show I am fighting expires once the fight is over.

It was a horrible call, don't sugarcoat it, Goddard is human and fucked up in a insane manner. Without a doubt

the refs job is to protect the fighters. sometimes protect them from themselves. this dude was not going to tap but he was not going to get out of that either .if the bell never rang he would still be stuck in that position right now.he wasnt even trying to get out. if he was mounted and eating punches and not moving or trying to defend himself the fight gets stopped.kicking your legs is not intelligent defense .it is simply flailing around. the stoppage after the bell is weird to me. the guy somehow survived and made it to the bell then the dipshit officials decide after they let him get strangle fucked for way too long that now is the time to make a decision.that decision should have been made 30 seconds earlier.same result except the dude keeps some living brain cells

What kind of baseless comment is that? The fight went 15 minutes, when was Merab choked to death? Dude was never out, ref did a perfect job, he kept checking and the guy kept showing just enough to stay in the fight.

So after the 15 minutes was up the guy was gonna die? What the fuck are you even saying. The ref made the right call, Goddard fucked it up.
