Is American Kickboxing Academy unfairly singled out over its training injuries?

UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold believes so.

The San Jose camp has come under fire in 2016 when a pair of pay-per-view main events dropped out due to AKA fighters withdrawing due to injury -- first in January, when Cain Velasquez's back injury caused him to drop out of his scheduled UFC 196 fight againstFabricio Werdum, then when Daniel Cormier's leg injury meant he had to withdraw from his UFC 198 rematch with Jon Jones, which has since been rescheduled for UFC 200.

Rockhold's clearly gotten tired of the criticism, as he raised his voice at a recent UFC 199media day when asked about the camp's injuries.

"People want to talk about our camp," Rockhold said. "You guys, we have the top camp in the world. We have all the best guys. So if anybody gets hurt, people get hurt in every other situation, but they're not all from one big camp, like ours."

Cain pulls out constantly, Cormier just pulled out, Khabib was out for years, Rockhold got injured before the Weidman fight. This doesn't appear to be a normal occurrence at other top level camps. Sure fighters pull out from time to time, but at AKA they pull out of fights at a ridiculous rate. Rockhold saying this is alarming. I can understand sticking by your own, but the fact that he can't even recognize something that's such an obvious problem is kind of ridiculous, IMO. The opinion of a bench-warming, arsehole like myself doesn't mean squat, but the MMA community such as Analysts, promoters, fighters, etc. have pointed out this problem numerous times...

AKA is getting criticized a lot probably because their most notable guys r always getting injured and those guys r usually in the spot light. Cain, Cormier, Rockhold, Khavib are all champion material and are usually signed to anticipated bouts which disappointment must be bigger by the fans when they don't follow thru

Where is Cain on that list? He must have pulled out of at least 6 fights.
The list is flawed at best. It's definitely not based strictly on injuries as it has Jon Jones listed for pulling out of UFC 151 when he certainly wasn't injured.
In the case of Cain, it may be that he's only pulled out of a few fights due to injury but it seems like more because he gets injured again while recovering from the original pull out. Who knows?

IT's also the amount of time Cain, Khabib and some of the AKA guys have been off. Then the "I'm ready to fight" then out for even longer. Perhaps AKA doesn't have more injuries than others but they sure do have some serious injuries that put guys on the shelf for a L O N G time.

We'll always hear words like 'intensity' and 'top camp' from these guys. In terms of purely fighting pedigree, they are among the top camps in MMA. However, the sheer volume of significant injuries suffered within this camp proves that the training regime is not actually the best. A lot of these injuries can be attributed to the nature of the training that, like all martial arts training, can occasionally have a detrimental affect on the body.

This is simply another occasion where ego overwhelms reality.

I can see where he's coming from. He says other camps have injuries but they're not all from one big camp. Just how much bigger is AKA compared to others?

yeah wtf I had no idea they had more fighters than Blackzilians and ATT

thought it was 5 known guys (Mike Kyle still trains there right?) and a few unknowns

According to Wiki they've got about 25 professional guys training there. ATT has more than that by far iirc. Maybe a selling feature of AKA is that ams can train/spar with pros...otherwise it's hard to sell a membership for the prices on their weebsite lmao

They should hire Marv Marinovich as their strength and conditioning coach. He was based in Santa Cruz last I heard, which is only an hour or so south of where the new AKA is located.
