With the end of his contract forthcoming, MacDonald has been keen to test free agency and see what kind of value he can command on the open market. In a recent interview with the MMA Report on FightNetwork.com MacDonald spoke about McGregor's influence on his own current career decisions (transcript via MMAFighting):

"I think it's important to get it out there. It's a known topic about fighter pay now and I think it's beneficial to me that I get it out there too so when it comes time to negotiate I have other sources to talk with. It's a known thing, people are buzzing about it. It's a good thing."
...
"I'm a simple martial arts guy. I come from humble beginnings so I don't require a lot to feel comfortable. But now that I have a little girl on the way, I want to be able to provide everything she's gonna need in her life. So that's a big motivator to start getting paid for this because it doesn't last forever."
...
"I look up to [Conor McGregor] in that sense. There's a lot to be learned from his stance and sticking up for himself. Getting what he's worth...Not just accepting what's thrown at you. Standing up for yourself. That's the thing martial artists aren't used to. You've got to really stick up for yourself and be a tough businessman when it's time for negotiations."

Go get paid Rory.

Thompsons biggest shot at winning is standing. Rory needs to assure that he gets this win in the bag. Ride off into free agency as the number one contender.

Don't be stupid Rory; grapple with Thompson.

I really hope he gets a nice big bump upcoming. But I honestly don't think he will. He's good enough but not exciting enough ufc may let him walk. Sans his last fight with lawler. Which was incredible.

Someone is going to pay Rory more than he would've had if Bellator wasn't a serious #2. I love the fact Bellator can help drive the price up. These fighters are ripped the fuck off.

Not Exciting enough? His last couple fights have been sick.

If he wins his next match, he will be the number one contender without a doubt.

He is the single biggest draw, not named gsp, in Canada.

He is 26, about to enter his prime.

Dude has a lot riding on this fight, but the man has serious value win or lose.

Think about it, Coker publicly called for Rory to test free agency. I'm sure he will get a very solid deal, but stay with the UFC. The man deserves this.

Best wishes for Rory, really hope he wins the fight against Wonderboy just for the idea the UFC will HAVE TO dig deep in their pockets to keep him. It may stop some of the UFC's gambling practices when it comes to paying top fighters like Rory what they are worth. Obviously the UFC is betting on Thomspon winning this fight thinking R Mac worth will go down with a loss. Big gamble on both sides with extra pressure on the fighter, this time I hope R Mac wins and wins big so the UFC has to pay BIG. Cuz it would look very bad if the No1 contender left for greener pastures. WAR RORY!!!!
