Alexander Sedykh, who arrived at the event near Moscow as the reigning champion in the squat, suffered the most gruesome of injuries after failing in his attempt to lift 400kg.
As Sedykh attempted to thrust upward both of his knees gave out and the entire weight transferred through his legs.
He fractured both knees and needed his quadricep muscles reattached after being rushed to hospital for surgery.
“The forecasts are as follows — lie down for two months, do not move your legs. Then learn to walk again and to recover,” Sedykh said. “The quads were double stitched, the knees were reassembled.”
The six-hour operation was a success but it’s unknown if Sedykh plans to resume his career.
