Russian Under-18 Team Suspended in Major Doping Scandal
Apr 6, 2016

International, Team Russia, U18

According to Russian sports writer Slava Malamud, the entire Russian Under-18 hockey team has been suspended in the largest doping scandal in hockey history.

Per Malamud, the team are victim to the first Meldonium scandal in Russian hockey. The roster of players had not been confirmed officially, but had included NHL Draft prospects German Rubtsov, Vladislav Sukhachyov and Mikhail Berdin, among others.

There is no word yet as to if it affects Russian prospects currently playing in the Canadian Hockey League.

The Under-18 coach was fired and the team was replaced by Under-17 prospects for the tournament.

Meldonium has been in the news recently for Russian athletes, especially with tennis legend Maria Sharapova recently getting banned from the sport.

The Under-18 World Championships were set to take place Grand Forks, North Dakota from April 14th-24th.

Lol @ testing the Canadian players. I get they have to be fair but it makes the Russians look worse when all the Canadians pass

I don't know if the game changed because of the players or the players changed because of the rules but hockey players these days are usually not physically small

But on the flip side, haven't enforcers become less common, with teams opting to put more highly skilled players on the ice?

Paging a few other Canadian hockey gurus @Lars and Psychotropic Wanderlust @Psychotropic Wanderlust for answers/clarity

there is no more enforcers in the 1983 sense of the word anymore.there is no unskilled goon that follows around the talent and makes sure gretzky can score 100 goals unbothered. there is 3rd and 4th line guys who will drop the gloves still and who dont see loads of ice time but they have to be able to play hockey at a proper level and know their roles within the team or else they are a liability.there will always be fighting and always be big hits.it is just part of the game.things get chippy.some asshole just spent the last half of the game beaking off every time he skates by and poking at you with a stick.sooner or later things are going to get heated.i would suspect tons of players use gear for endurance and recovery reasons.hockey players are all tall and lean .there is no place for being a jacked up juice monkey in the sport and it would probably hurt their performance.they most likely juice during the off season and to recover from injuries. these russians though seem to think kids need to juice up for some fucked up reason

Meldonium is purported to increase endurance and speed recovery from exercise fatigue, so if it really does that it would be a perfect performance enhancer for high aerobic and high contact sports like hockey. It has never been proven to be a performance enhancer, but there are a large number of high level athletes who are using it.
