South Korean police have arrested a university design professor for allegedly beating a former student and forcing him to drink human urine and eat feces.
The 52-year-old professor and several other former students are accused of beating the 29-year-old victim with a baseball bat, putting plastic bags filled with pepper spray over his head and forcing him to collect human waste and then swallow it while they watched on 16 different occasions, Seongnam Jungwon police told the Korea Times. The suspects told police it was punishment for what they called professional mistakes.
When he tried to escape, “they threatened him with the false accusations,” a police officer told the newspaper. “They also said they would cut his Achilles tendon if he ever tried to run away.”
Police described the victim as a “modern-day slave,” according to theAssociated Press.
The victim and the other suspects worked at the former professor’s nonprofit organization.
From 2013 until earlier this year, the victim tolerated the abuse because, he said, he wanted a job the professor promised him. He wanted to be a professor.
Police said the professor also forced him to work at a restaurant and stole his earnings. It was an employee at the restaurant who told police about the abuse.
In the past, South Korean teachers have used corporal punishment to correct students but the controversial tactic has since faded away, the AP reported.
Two other former students involved in the abuse were also arrested. A third student was booked for helping them with the abuse but was not detained.
