Just watched the original trilogy (iv-vi) with Mrs. Beard as she'd never seen them. Well, as a little Beard I watched them on VHS, so watching the Blu ray version was a first for both of us. What in the fuck were they thinking by adding all the bullshit? Can anyone shed some light on this for us? Don't get me wrong, they haven't completely ruined them, but they certainly didn't make them any better.

They changed at least 10 minutes worth of shit, and it's all really obvious CGI. They also cut out Anakin for their new younger Anakin form the end scene with the dead Jedis.
Wtf, I wonder if it's all cgi'd up because it looks like shit on Blu-ray because of the clarity.

There was a torrent floating around not long ago of a very HQ fan re-remaster of the original, untouched VHS release. Probably still around if you look hard enough.

I'm not that hard up. Just don't understand why you'd mess with something that was perfect.

It's CGI'd up because George Lucas is an idiot. He kept fucking with it to "enhance" his original vision, all the while slowly destroying everyone's memories of the film, one re-release at a time.

Agreed 100000%! The Janna the hut screen in #4 pissed me off the most. It looked like some high schooler did that shit in his parents basement.

I have the blue rays and would gladly pay for this if someone could figure out how to put the fan one on DVDs or bluerays!

For those wondering. We just finished watching Jedi, and I found the frivolous add ons to be 1) most obvious and 2) most offensive of everything they unnecessarily added.

I've been hoping, along with many others, that Disney would release untouched original versions on Blu-ray. Unfortunately that doesn't look like it will ever happen.

I've still got a VCR around here somewhere, I'm pretty sure I also have my THX remastered, but scenes non tempered with Star Wars tapes somewhere too.

You used to be able to find DVDs that were made from the Japanese mastercopy laserdisks that were unmolested but I can't find it on innerwebs anymore. What you saw was actually two re edits, he did it first in 1997 and then in 2004.

In commemoration of the franchise's 20th anniversary in 1997, Lucas and his production company, Lucasfilm, digitally preserved and restored the original negatives of the first three films. In addition, new computer-generated (CG) special-effects shots, CG enhancements to existing shots, new scenes, and changed musical pieces were added. The alterations have been controversial among fans, giving rise to the phrase "Han shot first", which references one of the more contentious changes made to the original film.

For the original trilogy's 2004 DVD release, the negatives were re-scanned, the color timing was redone, and further changes were made to the films to fix continuity issues with the prequel trilogy. At the time, Lucas claimed the original films were "25 to 30 percent" of what he had intended and stated these DVD releases are the canonical versions of the original trilogy.[1] However, the original, unaltered theatrical editions were released on DVD in 2006. The six films received Blu-ray releases in 2011: The original trilogy used the same masters as the 2004 DVDs with additional tweaks,[2] and minor changes were made to the three films comprising the prequel trilogy.

agree 100%. han was the only shot & the only way it should be.

it was just the anti-lucas battle cry @ the time.

Han's a badass (at least in Star Wars and Empire). He wouldn't wait for Greedo to act.

EDIT: Han is a badass period. So what if he got a mushy in Jedi.
