"Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle said in a proposed decision Wednesday that Starbucks and other companies had failed to show that the threat from a chemical compound produced when roasting coffee was insignificant, court documents showed."

"Starbucks and some 90 other defendants in the case have until April 10 to file objections. Other defendants include Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc, the J.M. Smucker Company and Kraft Foods Global, according to court documents."

Now also coffee gives you cancer, or does it?

Lol. Thank God I just drink their chai, and vodka, and sprite zero, and orange juice.

Never mixed together.

I know California has generally alarmist regulations, so are they being silly again or is it a real threat? Not that I drink anything Starbucks, but there are other coffee companies involved. And I do like my coffee.

Yes, it's a threat but they don't know how much of a threat it is and it naturally occurs in a fuck ton of foods so you're probably not avoiding it.

Everything’s bad for you apparently
Note that people are generally very quick to dismiss labeling coffee as a potential cancer causing carcinogen but less quick to dismiss the same claims against Roundup? People tend to think natural ingredients aren't ever bad for you no matter how high the dose or exposure. It's interesting but people generally believe what occurs in nature is less harmful to people but just because it exists in nature, doesn't mean we have tolerances to an indefinite dose or exposure but this is often the train of thought that many people adapt.

Coffee's good, coffee's bad — why can't scientists make up their mind? | CBC News

"I think what's interesting about the coffee story is that it's yet another example of what the public perceives as the flip-flopping of nutrition science," says Timothy Caulfield, Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy at the University of Alberta. "This food is good for you, [and then] this food is bad for you."

The problem, says Caulfield, is that it can be very difficult to arrive at reliable conclusions in nutritional science, since findings are often based on observational studies — ones looking at how humans behave in uncontrolled environments. This means researchers can't necessarily prove that it was the act of drinking coffee that made someone more susceptible to cancer rather than some other factor.

"You can't do a randomized control trial on coffee, and have a population that drinks coffee and a population that doesn't drink coffee, and follow them for 20 years," Caulfield explains.

"There are so many variables associated with this. Humans are complicated biological units, we live in complicated environments, we make decisions throughout the day that impact our health. To isolate one food, one substance, isn't easy."

That’s true to a degree, although there are some natural herbs and such as some herbal products that can be harmful as well. Besides, people just looovvveee their coffee.

I remember this mentioned on the radio, pretty much the same story (a brief version of course). Coffee’s good for you,......no no wait, coffee’s bad, no wait......ahh fuck wait it’s good for you again.

I wish they would make up their damn minds.

Every bar and restaurant, including fast food, has a stupid generic cancer warning plastered on the wall in California. Tbh all this article taught me is that I didn't realize they didn't have them in Starbucks too.
