A 14-year-old boy from Worcester, Massachusetts, died Friday as a result of a viral internet trend, the individual’s mother claims.

Harris Wolobah died after he was sent home due to complications from the “One Chip Challenge,” a social media trend promoted by snack maker Paqui. The seasoning on the challenge chip, which is packaged individually in a coffin-shaped box for $9.99, contains Carolina Reaper and Naga Viper peppers. The product warning advises consumers to “seek medical assistance if you experience difficulty breathing fainting, or extended nausea.”

The cause of his death is unconfirmed as the autopsy results are yet to be released, according to NBC 10 Boston, but the teen’s mother, Lois Wolobah, told the outlet she believes complications from the One Chip Challenge killed her son.

The sophomore at Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester consumed the spicy chip during school and developed a serious stomach ache, a school nurse told the boy’s mother, per the outlet.

The school nurse decided to send Harris home, and family members later found him unconscious and immediately took him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the New York Post.
Lois Wolobah told NBC 10 that her son should have been sent to the hospital right away rather than sent home.

“It is with a heavy heart I share that we lost a rising star, Harris Wolobah, who was a sophomore scholar at Doherty Memorial High School. As a mother and educator, I cannot imagine how hard this is on his family, friends and teachers,” Worcester Public Schools Superintendent Rachel Monárrez said in a statement Sunday. “My heart goes out to all who knew and loved him.”

Wonder if he had eaten hot food before

I grow Carolina Reaper, hot but didn't kill me

Wonder what it is that turns your tongue blue, maybe that is poison? Or maybe this year's version doesn't have the blue in it.

I can't even eat hot cheetos bruddah so I'd be throwing up just at the sight of those reapers. I wonder what liability if any the chip maker has since they put on their packaging and website that it's for adults...

You need to work up your body to deal with that level of heat. It’s no joke and and can fuck your heart up in a nasty way

I believe the main part of the challenge is how long you can go without eating or drinking anything after the chip...

I took a habanero challenge for 20 bucks as a 15 year old
Had to eat one and go 20 minutes without drinking anything
3 people who had lost the challenge from the same jar of peppers bet against me, so I won 60 from my 20 dollar bet

Then my buddy gave me the jar because it had cost him 40 in lost bets

I then used the Jar and won a handful more bets against people that couldn't go 20 minutes...Jar paid me well, my football player bros couldn't resist betting and all but one freaked out within 10 minutes and guzzled milk/water

I'm not a fan of the viral challenges though, too much Fomo and not enough thought going on IMO.
RIP To the young man if the chip is what took him out

"How long can you last before spiraling out?"
Sadly prophetic marketing, I bet that slogan disappears and maybe the chip altogether.

Lol been eating habanero since I was a child and chile de arbol, serrano, etc. I wouldn't try this challenge because I only eat spicy things for taste eating it to be an edgelord is silly to me.

Nice
NW white boys had never even heard the word habenero in 95'

I hear ya though, not into contests or tolerance anymore...just flavor

I like Paqui ghost pepper chips for taste if you want to sweat
Hot but it fades quickly

My mom used to put serrano peppers in everything they are hotter than jalapeños and that was my norm they would be around the house all the time.

"Simply put, serrano peppers are 2-4 times hotter than jalapeños. Serranos rate between 10,000-20,000 SHUs"

Serranos are hot
I like growing them every 3 years, one plant lasts 2-3 years

That Louisiana sauce is delicious on fried chicken though I also like Tabasco chipotle on fried chicken.
Tabasco is good stuff. If I remember correctly it hits different than the ones I was talking about which are just cayenne peppers and vinegar. Love them on anything Mexican, especially tacos, sopes, and tostadas...
