When UK MMA was in it's infancy, it was full of criminals who were (or thought they were) gangsters. Most of them refused to learn jiujitsu, so they fell by the wayside.
Same thing in Sweden, most guys were either bouncers, criminals though most a combination of the two.

Derrick Lewis
UFC heavyweight star Derrick Lewis is larger than life both in terms of his stature and character, and so it’s only fitting that his criminal past is also out of the ordinary too.

Two weeks after graduating from high school, the 19-year-old Lewis found himself in deep trouble when the irate ex-husband of an older woman he had been seeing came looking for him in his neighborhood.

According to Lewis, the man was a member of the KKK and had began following him in his truck as a he returned home from a night out in Houston, Texas.

Lewis eventually approached his vehicle, at which point the man reached for the shotgun that was lying on the seat next to him. In self-defense, Lewis started punching him until he sped off in the direction of the police station.

The man he’d hit would lose the sight in his left eye as a result of the altercation, and several days later Lewis was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault.

Still, Lewis was lucky to only be handed two years probation to begin with, enabling him to attend his athletic scholarship to play football at college.

However, Lewis violated his parole due to not having transportation to get to college and being unable to pay his fees, so he was sentenced to five years in jail at the infamous ‘Sugar Land’ facility – ultimately serve three-and-half years before being released.

Anthony Johnson is one of the most exciting strikers in the business right now, and his five sub-minute finishes of most notably Glover Texiera and Antonio Rogerio (Little Nog) Nogueira stand as proof of his power. You never know when "Rumble" will throw a punch or launch a kick that will put his opponent's lights out. A couple of years ago it looks as though he was the only Light Heavyweight who stood a chance (slim as it may have been) of taking the belt from Jon Jones. Any such plans were taken from him after Jones' hit and run and Johnson loosing his title fight against Daniel Cormier.

Outside of the ring, he is no saint and has been accused of threatening and committing acts of violence against three women. The first incident was in 2009, the second in 2012 and the third was back in 2014 and got him a brief suspension from UFC competition.

An early star of the UFC, Patrick Smith lost to Ken Shamrock back at UFC 1 and lost to Royce Gracie in the finals of UFC 2, two absolute legends of the industry. The rest of his career was basically an exercise in wailing on no-namers until his retirement in 2009, where he finished with a 20-15 record.

In 2008, he was arrested for eluding police and, while they were looking over his information, it was discovered that he had failed to register as a sex offender after being convicted of sexual assault on a minor in 1999. He was arrested in Texas for eluding police on his motorcycle, but that conviction was handed down in Colorado, after he forced himself on a 14-year old.

As Wild @Wild mentioned Paul Kelly is looking to fight again.

Last year I was working with a guy called Paul Kelly, and I wanted to tell him he's named after a Scouse drug dealer who fought in the UFC, but I just couldn't do it
