I haven't seen many episodes and my theory is probably wrong for many reasons already mentioned in the series, but I think Rick and Morty are the same person. And it is showing the whole gambit of the duality of nature, humans, and the contradictions it all contains and also how man is capable of being on either end of the spectrum of morality, perspective, etc. and how we can fluctuate and change so drastically throughout our lives.

I think the more prevalent theory is that the Rick we follow in the show is not from the same timeline as the Morty we follow in the show. It's possible that something happened to that timeline's Rick and the Rick we know has stepped in and taken his place. There's a few hints Rick has some history with an evil version of Morty that appears in one episode.

Its obvious. We have seen clues of it through out the series. That evil morty is more than likely the original. Add in the whole "free replacement morty" and morty insurance etc..
