I'm watching the keynote for AWS re:Invent (Amazon's cloud conference). They just held an on stage exhibition between Edson Barboza and Marc Decasey to demonstrate what they are providing for IoT services and announced their partnership with WME-IMG pointing out that they are mounting sensors in the UFC gloves to measure impact.

Get ready for UFC commentating to become MUCH more analytical.

They are also putting sensors (heart rate monitors?) on corner men and family members that are cageside to measure their stress levels as they watch the fight.

Yesterday's keynote included a presentation from an NFL exec that said they are doing the same by mounting sensors in shoulder pads which is how they are creating replays that highlight the movements of specific players and is being used by post game analysts.

I think we should extend this technology to TMMAC by mounting sensors on posters so we can track the trolling effectiveness in real time.

Yeah not sure Goldberg could quite deal with that, bless him.

Bad idea for family members, terrible in fact.

I’d like to see them tacked all over your head.......would just confirm what we already knew but you won’t admit

They should give that information to the judges as well.

Maybe do some predictive analytics on fighters outputs to sway the betting odds as well.

I like it... I cannot stand the UFC, but I am all about Amazon Web Services and data in general. Interesting stuff, at least to me.

Lol @ this bullshit.was this dreamed up by the same guy who thought putting a sensor on the hockey puck was a good idea so they could shop in a red streak for the fans who couldnt follow the game

Was it Rashad's wife who was nearly escorted off the premises for being too mouthy? Imagine that with reports to family members of the severity of impact.

Is this to measure safety or just how hard someone got knocked in the head?
The presentation didn't go into a lot of detail. They basically said they are installing a bunch of sensors throughout the arena to measure various things. One reason they gave is to gauge how tired the fighter is. Another is the fighter's power relative to the rest of the division.

I think they would only discuss it on fight ending punches on the post fight show is my guess.

Or before a bout to talk about average punch speed etc

Yesterday, they mentioned that a number of their ML services are now (or soon to be) supporting Tensorflow. I thought that was interesting given that it's their competitor's ML API. I'm guessing that is to try to transition customer from GCP to AWS, but Google could also use it in reverse. In the meantime, Amazon still gets paid though.

We can all see when a fighter drops his hands because he's knackered, but a "bunch" of sensors is interesting.

They are just collecting data from the family. Not reporting it to them.

They need to mic up Eddie Alvarez's wife. Throw on a heart monitor, and we got the perfect person for the job.

The sensors in the gloves is a great idea, more information about a fight the better.

LOL put heartrate monitors on the judges to see if/how they react to key moments

no, don't. that's sick and also not scientifically valid.

Better measure
> Bruce Buffers blood pressure while he's announcing the mmmmaaaaain eventtt
> Dana's heart rate, and at the end of the ppv show the top 5 moments where his HR spiked (could be caused by anything)
> put a sensor in the cup as well, you know, for Rogan...
> count how many M&Ms Daniel Cormier eats during a broadcast
> have all the spectators walk through a body scanner and the guy with the longest weiner gets 5 seconds of airtime on a crowd shot with his name a la Tequila Cazadores Spirit Award

Or fuck all that and put a well working camera on the referee instead.

I'm praying to all the MMA gods that the UFC makes this data public. This is a great resource to really change fight plans if it was available to trainers. You could get a sense of what positions your fighter isnt generating sufficient force in G&P and make technical corrections to posture or swing. On the feet, you'd get a better idea what angles your opponent tends to use to hit the hardest and you'd know to avoid types of strikes in that sweet spot. Rather than monitoring the families, which is stupid, putting sensors under the mat and around the cage would be a better use of money. I'd like to see sensors that could track hip movement so you could tell your fighter to avoid getting flat. I'd also be interested to see sensors measuring the amount of pressure an opponent puts on the cage so the fighter could train to deal with that exact weight.

There's a lot to be done with this tech, but I'm sure they'll waste it on occasional anecdotes for Anik like "he's punching at about 40% Joe."

Bellator did this during Bjorns era on about 5 or 6 cards. I honestly have no idea what happened to the data or what was done with it. Initially it was to give real time info during the fight but I think the tech wasnt quite up to speed yet.

The sensor was a small box looking thing, about half the size of a starburst candy. They had the cutmen put it under the last layer of tape on the top of the wrist. I expected fighters to complain about it being there but surprisingly none did.
