If you’re an avid reader of High Times, you’ve no doubt seen the myriad of advertisements for weed paraphernalia that adorn the magazine’s pages — everything from vaporizers to Tommy Chong-endorsed detox solutionsthat probably won’t help you pass that drug test you got coming up.
But back in the ’70s and ’80s, the designer drug of choice was cocaine, and companies rushed to get in on the budding industry that was earning one Colombian so much money he could write easily off $2.1 billion in cash a year because rats were eating it.
The World’s Best Ever catalogued an assortment of coke merch advertisements from the drug’s hey day, and let’s just say they’re nothing if not unsubtle.
Going along with the notion that cocaine was a rich person’s drug that conveyed a certain status, many of the ads highlighted the “distinguished tastes” of its addiction-addled target audience.
There was also of course, no shortage of novelty products.
And sex sold then, just as it does now.
Just as we today have dubious fake marijuana products like K2 and spice, so did the ’70s and ’80s have synthetic blow.
