Thiago Alves will be 15-pounds lighter in his next UFC bout. The former welterweight title challenger announced on social media last week that he is moving down to the lightweight division and is targeting a return to action in August.

Should @ufc announce in a month the latest. Late August we back. Ryan Wilson on Twitter

It should be noted that the Brazilian announced a drop down to 155-pounds last summer, and that never ended up happening. Alves has had trouble making weight on two occasions in his career at welterweight, so it will be interesting to see if he's…

As much as I want to bring up USADA blah blah blah....

We just got another absolute killer at lightweight....hahaha Alves without a reach deficiency.

I can see how he's had troubles making weight in the past....his weight shoots up to around the 200's on his off season.

But it can't just be USADA, it has to be the IV ban too. The LW division is about to get more stacked, and it's interesting how he will handle facing potential faster opponents.

I'm not surprised, guys like him, Hendricks and Woodley are big guys, but in weight only.

WW has been getting taller and longer for awhile now. I'm not sure on the numbers, but ALOT of fighters, especially in the top 10 are between 6'0-6'2 with pretty decent reaches.

I think Woodley and Hendricks are the only guys in the top 10 who are so short, but Woodley does have a great reach for his height and is explosive/quick enough to close that gap if he needs too.

Could Alves be the first monopedal fighter in the UFC, because I assume the only way for him to make 155 is by amputating one of his legs.

The Condit fight showed he was undersized for the division. Not tall or long enough to compete with the top guys.

With USADA rules in place, he'll be losing a lot of that muscle.

haha this is a joke until he hits 155 on the scales, and I'm confident he's losing his debut unless they throw him a free win.

they'll probably match him with a 135er coming up :D so it will look like Tibau vs Uno

I hope he does well. He's got a great style and he goes in there to fight and, echoing others, he won't have the crazy reach disadvantage he's had to deal with at ww.

The guy is a huge 170lber, now he's going to fight at 155? And without the ability to rehydrate via IV? This has disaster written all over it.

alves is going to have a hard time making 155 lbs he will have to walk around at 175 lbs and cut 20 lbs without an iv , he used to cut more weight than most wrestlers including jon fitch at 170 lbs and has missed weight 3 times at 170 lbs

This is crazy. We have to bump this thread when he weighs in at like 177 for his LW debut.

This. I wish the guy all the best, as he's a great fighter and also seems like a great guy.

But if he's able to make LW and look good, you'd really have to questions his time at WW before USADA, and I think there's been plenty of questioning for a while considering his physique.
