Who are some of your favourite character actors?

As in, they're never the lead role in anything, they're not stars, you probably don't know their name...... but they pop up in a bunch of stuff, and they always deliver a good performance, and you always enjoy seeing them show up?

For instance, a couple of my favourites:

Brad Dourif:

James Cromwell:

Who are some of your favourite character actors who deserve some appreciation?

Jeffrey Combs. He's as solid a B actor as any role needs.
Star Trek series, Herbert West in Re-Animator (photo), the list of his credits is big.

A character actor is generally understood to be an actor who plays supporting roles. He's never the lead, is often quite unusual or intense looking, and generally plays an eccentric or strange character.

Fairuza Balk would be an example of a character actress.

That's what google said and spat out a load of actors that I would call leading actors or have been the lead in multiple films.
Even Serkis has had leads. Buscemi has also been lead actor. But I guess it has to be Serkis.

That's true, there is some overlap. For instance, I would call both Steve Buscemi and Christopher Walken character actors, even though everybody knows their names and they've been leads. ?

Serkis definitely counts, too.

Definitely Larry Gilliard Jr. Not only did he have a career defining role as D'angelo Barksdale with his famous "Where's Wallace?" scene, but he also had one of the most memorable scenes in the Walking Dead with "Tainted meat!" He's been a lead in probably one film in his life, but otherwise a solid and dependable chatacter actor who can really perform when the moment calls for it.
