Redneck Irish probably more accurate. We are almost equally descendant from Irish convicts and their English overlords. Obviously convict Paddy was more likely to evolve into a bogan than his tea-sipping master.
I don't think Americans appreciate how boganish Brits are. They have many different types of bogan - be they scouser, geordie, brummie, yorkie - each with their own horrifying and incomprehensible version of English and unique, disgusting individual traits.
While there are some subtle regional differences in bogans here, it's more about the intensity and density of bogan levels (i.e bogans comprise about 90% of Melbourne, 95% of Sydney, 99.8% of Brisbane, and 100% of the rest of the country). Once you've met one Australian bogan, you've pretty much met them all. This Australian redneck species will glass you for looking at them funny in a pub, but at least they won't stab you for wearing the wrong football jersey - something that cannot be said of their British counterpart.
