How dare you !!

If I played the bass I would be offended
Don't get me wrong, there are some bassists whom are better (much, much better) than others, but if you pull Joe Radio-listener and ask him to name his favorite bassists, he's going to give you like 4 names and then not be able to name anymore. You ask that same person to name their favorite guitarists or lead singers and you're going to get a much more extensive list. @Rhino has a very legit opinion, but the amount of strong opinions in this thread doesn't jive with the actual interest the public has in bassists. It would be the same if someone makes a thread about the Top 10 drummers:

1) The guy that sued Napster.
2) The guy from the Pamela Anderson porn.
3) The guy with one leg from Def Leppard.
4) Animal from the Muppets.
5) Uhh, you know that other guy from that really good band from the mid-90's.

Hard to disagree with you man, although any time someone talks to me about bass I always mention Stanley and Bruce, usually Phil as well but for different reasons.

You forgot John Bonham, hes a well known drummer as well, bald lad from Genesis too , can't remember his name, sells chocolate as a gorilla.

So many other phenomenal bassists, guys that I remember playing shows with back in the day, guys who are phenomenal studio session guys... There are so many who just make the bands they're in better, I'll make a more comprehensive list of my favs and influences later

for anyone who doesn't want to watch the video...

10) John Myung - Dream Theater
9) John Deacon - Queen
8) Flea - RHCP
7) Les Claypool - Primus
6) Cliff Burton - Metallica
5) Steve Harris - Iron Maiden
4) John Paul Jones - Led Zeppelin
3) Paul McCartney - The Beatles
2) John Entwistle - The Who
1) Geddy Lee - Rush

I think you can throw out Geddy Lee and Paul McCartney, they're 'multi-instrumentalists' who play bass in their band...not the same as a bassist, IMAO.

I'd replace those two with Geezer Butler - Black Sabbath and Chris Squire - Yes

here's Chris Squire laying down licks for reference
I know my way around music in general but not so much about bass.
You put Myung in 10th place but it was still first on the list ;)

I get tingles with any Dream Theater mention

Their upcoming tour is worth the watch, it's the same set as I saw in Oakland a few months back. Petrucci is an absolute genius.
Go see it, they're brilliant.

Scratch that, it was SF I saw them, I saw Petrucci with G3 in Oakland.
