Where did that dude even come from?
Wild. I couldn't make out what he kept saying. Appeared to be on something.

Do we know who the female was in the front seat of the cop car? Was that like a ride-along or something? Weird that she never got out of the car - and the cop didn't shoot until the guy appeared to be making a run at her.

Not sure why the cop used live rounds - appeared to be a good case for a taser - but that dude was definitely asking for it. Matt Serra.

Just someone that wandered up to the stop, she was a ride along. The officer had been stabbed at this point and he was approaching the side door of the ride along. Appears that the officer had nothing in the chamber, why dead guy was laughing saying I know you have no ammunition.

He had already stabbed the officer, had a knife and was approaching the door of a civilian ride along, totally justified.
The officer was superficially cut, not stabbed. He didn't even realize he was wounded until after back up arrived and the scene was cleared.

It's pretty obvious the guy who got shot was not thinking clearly. The cop had what appeared to be a baton, and likely had access to a tazer either on his person or in his car. I think the reason the cop lost his cool and shot the guy unnecessarily was that he was approaching the passenger side of the patrol car and there was a civilian in the car who was on a ride along.

The occupant of the police car was a community member on a ride-along with the officer. Officers recovered a weapon from Grillone on scene. It was initially reported that there were no additional injuries. However, the SLCPD later learned that the officer involved in this incident received an injury consistent with a sharp-edged object. The officer’s injury is not considered life-threatening. There is no 9-1-1 call associated to this case.

Should have tazered him in the knee.

He was about to take a hostage. Justified as you can get. Batons don't hurt that bad when you're on drugs. The tazer might have worked but would you take that chance if you're daughter was in the passenger's seat?

I am not a cop and I live in MA. If that situation unfolded in the same way for me, I am confident I would be prosecuted for homicide.

I have been on a ride along. The passenger door on the cruiser was required to be locked and the window was required to be up.

Why do you think the nutbag was trying to take a hostage? The guy was out of his tits and it didn't appear he was acting intentionally in any way. I understand the cop was justified in shooting the guy, but that doesn't change the fact that he didn't have to.

Adrenaline is a hell of a drug, you don't use non deadly force against deadly force. A couple of videos of someone with a knife. Should they have been tazed?

totally justified.
Once he started for the civilian, sure.
But this dude should have been tased long before that. Or shot when the guy got close enough to strike him.

When his gun went *click* because he wasn't racked, that would have been a bad shoot. The guy was walking away and not toward anyone at that moment.

I don't really care as this dude was obviously a danger to society, but if the cop handled it differently he could have ended that situation with non-lethal methods.

It's always easier to judge how the cops handle these situations after the fact. That was fucking nuts.

He was running towards the truck with the driver standing right to next to it
So you fire a shot with a civilian right in the line of fire?

He wasn't running at the dude in the truck. He was running to the back of the truck. Actually - once he jumped into the back would have been a great opportunity to tase his ass. He was a sitting duck, and you don't have to worry about him falling down.

I'm sure the cop was still trying to figure out what the fuck was going on so not really judging him, but "the only solution was for this guy to die" is a weird hill to defend.

But I'm OK that he's dead. He fucked around. He found out.
I'm all about personal accountability.
