Because Masvidal is 1-2 in his last 3 and has a UFC welterweight record of 5-4. He's also the type of fighter Ben Askren has spent his entire career beating - guys with pretty good, but not great, wrestling. It should be seen as an utterly meaningless fight for Askren. It tells us nothing.

Who do you think would be a good matchup for Askren?

Maia has been beaten almost-exclusively by elite wrestlers...

Usman, Covington, Woodley, Rory, Jake Shields, Chris Weidman, Mark Munoz...and a one-punch KO that I watched live from Nate The Great.

Nice! Told ya'll Askren was gonna keep putting the pressure on Game Bred
so he had to take this fight. Its the biggest fight they can make right
now with the rest of the guys already booked or injured.

Its not a good match up for Jorge but its the biggest fight available to him

I agree mostly but wouldn't go so far as to say its a wash for Ben

Jorges has a chance here. Its between jack and slim though and slim just left town

He has to be perfect to win this fight. All Askren needs is one good hold

Strong Agree.

Jorge will be the underdog, but if he wins he'll be next in line for a shot at the belt (ideally).
And if he loses, he'll stay in the Top 10, maybe even Top5 depending on how it goes down and other fights shake out.

Well Masvidal is certainly better than Luis Santos.

They beat him on the feet after he exhausted himself failing at takedowns. That's playing right to The Funk
How so? Maia's cardio is shit independently of failed takedowns - he's had cardio issues even in fights where he wasn't repeatedly getting stuffed. And that of course is an advantage for Askren. But the key variable you are missing is Askren's completely unproven striking ability.

Maia, as silly as it sounds, is the far more accomplished MMA striker.

matchmaking isn't about finding out who's the better fighter, it's about selling the most tickets.

It’s hysterical that Masvidal is the 4th ranked ww in the world.

This sport is a pile of shit in so many ways.

I’m in the camp of this being an easy UD for Ben. What irks me is the march-making. Ben-Robbie rematch not only should happen, but would sell. Jorge-Leon May. It make sense from a rankings standpoint, but would sell. Jorge is coming into the public eye as a moderately serious contender for the first time in his 14yr pro career. He just made headlines beating a top prospect then clowning Edwards backstage. Why subject him to a wet blanket loss?

Masvidal wore the Maia backpack and took zero damage
He can beat Ben no doubt but it could end up Ben winning via points iMO
