The UFC could be making even more changes as part of its new weight-management program.

In an e-mail sent to fighters this week, UFC vice president of athlete health and performance Jeff Novitzky wrote that the promotion is exploring the possibility of an earlier weigh-in, much like some state athletic commissions are implementing. MMA Fighting obtained a copy of the e-mail Friday.

"UFC is also working with the Athletic Commissions to test the feasibility of extending the weigh-in period, including a multi-hour weigh-in conducted at the host hotel," Novitzky wrote.

Commissions in Kansas and at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut have already tried an earlier weigh-in the day before Bellator events with almost unanimous positive feedback from fighters. The California State Athletic Commission is in the process of making an earlier weigh-in part of its official rules.

UFC 199 in Los Angeles on June 4 will be the first UFC event to be subject to the new system. Fighters will have a window to weigh in beginning at 10 a.m. the day before the event, rather than hitting the scale at the traditional time of 4 p.m. The idea stems from the advice of doctors, who say that giving fighters more time to rehydrate between the weigh-in and the fight will be beneficial to their health.

"giving fighters more time to rehydrate between the weigh-in and the fight will be beneficial to their health."

It would be more beneficial for them to fight at there true weight, and not go through unhealthy cuts. It should not be a contest of who cuts best and can be the bigger fighter. I dislike the fact that the light heavy weight champs walk around at the same weight as heavy weights.

I think if they had to weigh-in in the morning of the event then you wouldn't see these fighters cutting huge amounts. I can't imagine the stress on the body when you cut body weight then cut water weight.

When I was really cutting weight to get below 170 for fun my body went into shock one night and I started shaking and convulsing in bed. I couldn't get out of bed for four hours, I was only consuming about 1000 calories a day for 2 months. It was so fucking stupid but it was a goal to get as lean as possible and see how hard it is for an athlete to drop lots of weight. I couldn't imagine cutting 10-20 lbs of water weight on top of losing weight. I'm a relatively bigger guy and my normal weight when I'm in shape is 195-200 lbs so at the rate I was going I could've cut to 155 including the water weight in a matter of 6 weeks if I knew what I was doing. That is stupid.

One day an MMA star will die and things might change, I hope things change now and this isn't the way in my opinion.

Sell me on this please as I think it's going to make cutting weight a bigger part of the game.
This alone would allow for fighters to game the system and just try to cut even further... But in conjunction with the new limits that they are enacting that puts a cap on how much fighters can weigh when they first arrive to the host hotel then I think it's a good thing. Fighters won't be able to come in heavy the week of the fight and then cut down dramatically at the last minute.

Now they must arrive lighter, maintain it, cut down the last bit, and will have more time to rehydrate before the fight. In theory it's going to be great for a fighter's brain and overall health.

We'll see how it works in reality.
