Forum Member Zeph had a really great observation, I think it deserves it's own topic.

"Ariel just asked Matt Mitrione if he had 1 fight left on his contract and Mitrione said he had 2 fights left, but would be renegotiating after his next fight because 'they don't let you get off contract'. I guess this is the UFC's response to the Melendez situation. I wonder what they would do if you don't resign at 1 fight left, shelf you for as long as possible? Offer the worst possible match up?"-Zeph

This sounds like a very logical move that UFC now incorporates to retain fighters.

Does anyone have any holes to this type of contract negotiating?
Are there clauses(for the fighter) that require UFC to offer a certain number of fights within a certain time period?(I believe there's a clause for this but I think it's gray)

Yea that does sound like a way to ensure guys dont jump ship.

I remember Roy Nelson was one of the guys who didnt renegotiate a new contract and they gave him Stipe for his last fight. He lost and then signed new deal.
