Stipe Miocic is on track to becoming the greatest heavyweight in UFC history, but the 34-year-old isn’t returning to the Octagon until his contract issues are sorted, according to his management team.

MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani reports that Miocic, a part-time firefighter, is not happy about earning less than his heavyweight challengers. Back in January, the knockout artist hinted that he would be meeting with the UFC to negotiate a new contract, but things haven’t come to fruition.

“It definitely should change,” Miocic said about his contract on The MMA Hour earlier this year. “But the fact that (Alistair Overeem) made more money than me in my last fight was just kind of a slap in…

the ufc business model has always been not to pay these guys any more than the bare minimum .they dont want them getting any ideas.they create 1 millionaire at a time and let the rest of the savages try to claw there way to the top to get what that one guy hasit keeps the fighters hungry literally

Good time to play hardball. UFC are on course to have a terrible year, and everyone that can headline for 300-400k buys is increasingly more valuable at the moment.

It really shows that the belt does not equate money, but prestige only. Fans want to see who they want to see, regardless of the belt. It is entertainment as well as a sport. While the other brings glory, the other brings money. Market yourself, it is part of the sport, if you want to make money. The belt is only so much leverage, but having fans behind you ready to take over, that;s another story. Other than that, good on him trying.

Reem has always been a highest bidder fighter so I do understand his price tag...adds instant legitimacy and legend to any fight

One of the most devastating Strikers of all time human history....and also a guy who has lost badly many times and refuses to let that define him...dude is epic must watch

Max Holloway is unhappy with his contract and looking to get paid more, too.

When the champs are complaining about not getting what they deserve, you gotta think the fighters below top 5 are just going to get more and more discouraged with their treatment.

Wme's current trajectory has me worried for them, but hopeful for bellator

I read an interview with Jake Roberts where he said that the belt is something they put on guys to get them 'over' - but he never needed it.

And it's not going to get any better for WME for at least another year either, because they're going to do everything in their power to get those loans paid off...which means the fighters are going to get lowballed for a while.

That's every business model ever. It's just about every transaction ever.

Miocic probably shouldn't be making less than the guy he just KO'd lol. But it's a question of who people want to see. Going strictly by titles, etc would see Joanna or MM paid more than Overeem. Wouldn't make sense.

Fwiw, I don't hate any of these people. But fighters are selling themselves. Just the way the business works.

People want to see whoever is promoted properly.if the ufc promoted stipe or mighty mouse as much as ronda or conor then there might be a demand to see them.the fighters job is to win fights.the promoters job is to convince us that we want to see them fight

Imho a champion should make no less that a Mill at the least... that's not too much to ask from a company that beats it chest about jabbing the best sport inn the planet..There is no higher pinnacle than being a ufc champion and if a fighter is smart and wins a belt they should be able to live off their earnings the rest of their lives...if you're risking your life you should have financial security after you're done fighting if yoy aren't a fool and blow it all..

If the UFC promoted Stipe half as much as they do Dana, his pay per view numbers would increase dramatically. The UFC pockets 80% of the profits, but instead of spending some of that to promote guys like Stipe, Nunes, or Mighty Mouse, they tear them down in the media and set up scenarios, like UFC 215, so that Dana can hold a scrum after and gloat some more about Conor's success.

Fully agree with Stipe...You can say MM is a small guy, Nunes doesn't look a woman and Woodley is just keeping WW warm after GSP left...I disagree with all of of those assessments but at least understand.

Stipe though? Guy is fucking 6'4, finishes top guys quick and. brutally and is a damn fucking firefighter! I can't see any reason why he can't be promoted in a way that would get him buys, and can't think of any reason fans wouldn't wanna see him throw down

they tried to put him in a championship feud with Hulk Hogan, and the crowd immediately split 50/50 for Roberts.

the angle was dropped because they didn't think it was good business. The man was 20 years ahead of his time.

I was a big fan of The Snake, but I cannot recall him ever having a belt no you mention it.

Never held a belt in the WWF. They did a Snake Pit segment where Hogan took a DDT, and the crowd started chanting "DDT". It only aired live on the local market, then WWF edited out the chants for all other markets. But Hogan wouldn't touch Roberts after that.

He was supposed to take the IC belt from Honky Tonk Man, and then start an angle with Million Dollar Man, but Honky injured Roberts' neck with a guitar shot during a Snake Pit segment.
