I think he should receive a no contest.
I would like him to get a no contest, but I'm just not sure he's entitled to one, even though it's shady to not give it to him. But, if there really was confusion because of the bout order changing, I'm thinking maybe the judge didn't know he was supposed to be scoring even though he was watching. So that would be a no contest for sure.

Except it says, "Ratner further explained to MMAjunkie that he requests judges to score all contests at each event so the officials can review any decisions following the conclusion of the card."

So super weird -- if you're a judge but you're not assigned to a particular bout, you're still supposed to score it and never go to the restroom I guess. So if there are alternate judges, like alternate jurors, there must be a point, right? Or else they're acknowledging that judges screw up, but I've never heard of them releasing the alternate judges' scorecards.

I'm guessing some tainted meat was involved in the story somehow.

Every judge scored the first round for Santos, which is the round he wasn't in the correct seat for.

Just too much weird shit associated with this fight for me to feel confident that is was scored properly. That's why I think it should be overturned.

Definitely should be able to appeal for a NC. It doesn't really matter how close the fight was. If a judge was out of position for even a short amount of time, the first round should be effectively null and void.

never mind the no contest the judge should have answer for this.he had one job to do and was awol from his post.the guy should never judge another fight in his life. the outcome directly influences a fighters career path.there is really no acceptable excuse

Also the ref, who should check with the judges before starting the fight.

I'm wondering if there would be less corruption if everything was "in-house."

Ufc judging would probably be better if the judges didn't watch any of the rounds.

In all seriousness though, he should be able to have the first round reviewed by a commission to re-judge it, and confirm, yes Martins, you did get your ass kicked that first round. But fuck just giving it a no contest, Santos did nothing wrong and deserves that win.

So before they started, when they were announcing the fighters...there was an empty seat at the judges table and noone bat an eyelid?

...wtf? How does a fight start with a judge missing?

on main events they announce the judges names..you'd think they'd check if they are actually there or not..or do we only care about proper procedure if its a main event?
Dunno who looks worse...feel like it makes the UFC look amateur imho..

it is amateur hour

they run up on concrete instead of enter on Ramps like Pimps

They cower to the slumlord Promoter and hold their tounges as to not offend.

truly sad that these athletes sign away their likeness forever to compete and the majority are not properly compensated fairly.

Worst thing it starts at the top and the practices trickle down to minor promotions.

Suck my egg

UFC officials address 'missing judge' issue at UFC 204, camp asks for no contest

I like the poll thing.

This is a weird case, but I have to say that since there is no athletic commission, there really isn't an official seat that a judge HAS to sit in, right?

Sorry for creating so many threads lately. It's not that I have nothing else to do, it's just that I can't bring myself to concentrate on what I should be doing.

Thank you, Shelly. One day I'll add a third thing to my Herman's Head, but there hasn't been an obvious candidate yet.

Surely you can't be serious?
Okay, I understand your skepticism but sometimes we have to admit our ignorance on a given topic.

Wondering if there would be less corruption if everything was "in-house" was more of a speculative question but there's nothing inherently wrong with that imo.

I admit I am not privy to the inner workings of the various ways judging, reffing, corporate agendas and the gambling scene....and state commissions as well. With money involved, there is corruption, the question I have is whether those separate interests (when they become corrupt) keep each other in check or fuck things up more than if much of that was under one roof. If you know more about how these different facets of the fight game affect each other then I for one would like to hear more :)

Self regulation allllwwayysss works.

Volkswagen scandal puts capitalism's model of self-regulation to the test

What a shit show. We need a world governing body that is over all commissions for the sport. They can run as a direct solution to this problem when required, where no commission has jurisdiction, and handle any issues from within a commission. As well as setting the rules.

Self regulation of this kind just means this is no longer a sport, doesnt it? It's entertainment only. Whilst sport is entertainment, I get that, the fine line is observing rules that are defined and administered by qualified regulated people independant of financial gain. This is the exact opposite....

Well, suffice to say that the UFC has a major financial incentive to have certain fighters win, whereas an independent athletic commission does not. That alone should tell you all you need to know.

Also, If the UFC wanted to minimize ground fighting or clinch work all they would have to do is hire refs who stand/break up fights quickly (both in general and for specific fights.) In time they could drastically change the sport by firing any ref who didn't have a quick trigger to separate and resume striking.

Many, many more potential conflicts of interest as well.

Oh I whole heartly agree with what your saying.... it's just the question remains of whether or not they would do that and how people (customers) would react.

I'm inclined to think they'd give it a shot before people tuned out and stopped viewing, then they'd be left as being "WWE-light." That's not really a great market segment to capture. I think they'd have to play it straight just because it's so f'n heard to make works and shady shit look legit in mma. When things are dodgy, everyone picks up on it. I admit though, I could be giving these people more credit than they deserve in terms of running an honest production- I could be guilty of wishful thinking :/

I think an indication of how the general fan reacts is to ask them on the way into an arena at any next UFC event and ask them if they even know this missing judge thing happened.

I reckon less than 15% will know.
