Going to see this mob on Sunday, the first metal mariachi band. Some friends I know went last year and said they were awesome in a funny as fuck kind of way. It's at some LGBTQ fair. They're called Metalachi.

    Review:

Gary Clark Jr put on one hell of a show. He is an amazing guitarist. His backing band (4 other dudes...drummer, bass, keys & guitar) had a guitarist that was a badass as well. Didn't catch his name but I will do some research - he looked like an older white dude dressed like a wizard. LOL. But he could shred. Great show.

The opening act (Think no Think) was interesting. 3 piece band. Sort of a mix of Sex Pistols/Ramones with some White Stripes thrown into the mix. Is melodic punk a thing? The band was definitely driven by the lead singer/guitarist - who if I had to bet, lists Josh Homme (QOTSA) as one of his influences. Drummer had a lot of energy. Bassist looked like Cousin Itt. LOL. Never saw his face because his hair was covering his head. I will check out some more of their stuff.

Today a coworker offered me free tickets to go see a show tonight. I was able to make it happen on short notice (family, work, etc) and I just got home from seeing Steve Martin and Martin Short, with Steve's bluegrass band (Steep Canyon Rangers). Comedy and music mix, and pretty entertaining overall. It was cool to see Steve play his banjo live. I've heard he was pretty good, but never really followed his music.

Probably not tickets I would've sought on my own, but it was fun. I pretty much grew up watching those two dudes on SNL, SCTV, movies, etc.

What a weird, but awesome, unplanned addition to my day lol.

    Going old school tonight.

    James Taylor.

Bonnie Raitt is opening up for him. The only thing I know about her is she was married to Noonan from Caddyshack.

As always, I will report back with a review.

    Review:

Bonnie Raitt - I actually knew a couple of the songs. She's pretty talented. Decent slide guitar player. She played the piano on a couple songs too. Definitely old school - not like some of today's stars who are famous because of their looks instead of their talent. She's not just country either - a few of her songs were deeply rooted in the blues.

JamesTaylor - It was an enjoyable show. His set had video screens in back of him showing video to go along with his songs. Most had a reminiscent feel rooted in family and history. Pretty large band - complete with horns, piano and 3 females singing harmony. His first set was with the full band, then the second set it was more just him sitting on a stool playing his acoustic. He's a really good player - has a very unique style. I spent most of the concert watching his finger placements on the frets because I'm a nerd. Haha. He's a good storyteller and would introduce songs by explaining what was going on in his life when he wrote them. Pretty cool. For 70 years old, he does a great job. Voice is still holding up.

Bonnie Raitt came back out and sang a couple songs with Taylor during the encore. That was fun.

Overall it was a good show. Relaxed. Definitely a "sit on your butt and watch" type concert. Plenty of sing-a-longs during the bigger hits. Crowd was obviously older - most of them were drinking like crazy. Probably because every night is Friday night when you're retired.

Oh, and for the Blues Brothers fans out there... Blue Lou Marini is playing sax in Taylor's band. Dude still gets it done:
