I'm not a big horror buff but I get confused over this. In most movies with both vampires and werewolves, the werewolves are tougher, eg Underworld and Van Helsing.

However, when I watched horror movies as a kid, vampires were much scarier. They could turn into fog, fly and were super strong and fast. Werewolves were just like wild animals, like a tiger. Sure they were scary but you could climb a tree or swim to get away. Vampires seemed to be in a different league.

Is it simply that vampires became pussies? Any horror fans here who can shed some light?

I think it comes from most of us having less interaction with large pissed off animals. We fail to appreciate how f'n scary it'd be to have something coming to eat your face apart. With vampires, the psychological machinations exist with things like fog, disorientation and the religious overtones.

I wouldn't want to be chased by either one, but if I had to choose I'd rather have a werewolf after me.

Like Leigh @Leigh said, I could escape from a werewolf by climbing a tree. Against a vampire I'm pretty much fucked.

Well vampires couldn't be hurt. What could a werewolf do to a vampire? They're too fast and strong with too many powers.

American Werewolf in London was scary but was just a beast. Even modern vampires grounded in physics should smash him. Blade grabbed a full speed train and the bad guy from John Carpenters Vampires caught up with a speeding car.

Fair enough but either one could do the job against a person.
As a frail human, it's impossible for me to relate to or appreciate the kind of strength to yank a train off its tracks.
One of the scariest (and stupidest) things I've done (twice) is go for a walk alone at night, once in Kananaskis and once at a remote camp near Takakkaw Falls, I wasn't worried about vampires.
Go out into the forest or woods alone (the woods are so much friendlier aren't they? I'd rather be lost in the rain woods than the rain forest) at night and tell me which idea creeps into your head first.

Well a leopard is far too deadly to fight but I know a polar bear would kill one.

New year, new Leigh @Leigh?
What a strange thread, you are talking about a fantasy-being that is different in every encounter and compare it to a fantasy-being that is also different in every encounter in the media.
If they exist and fight each other, it all depends on the authors.
Even a Superman vs. Hulk discussion (or whatever from that) makes more sense.

somebody should write a movie about a werewolf that was bitten by a vampire.
scariest move ever.
Have you been watching twilight again?
ahhaha. i thought the exact same thing....twilight turned both the vampire and the werewolf into pussies.

Uh, I don't see what you're getting at with this :/
I thought you were saying that because both are vastly more deadly than a frail human, that you could not judge.

Well yes, there is some truth to that but most incarnations of these fantasy beings share some consistencies.

Vampires are (or were) beyond physical, able to seemingly vanish. They drink blood, have super strength, super speed, no reflection, can turn into a bat, don't like crosses or garlic (which is weird because...) and can only be killed by sunlight, decapitation or a stake through the heart.

Werewolves are also strong, can only be killed by a silver bullet and transform under a full moon but that's about it.

Underworld has hybrids.

Its like zombies, they change a bit as well here and there. I don't think you can make a clear lineal scientific or social judgement on the change of these creatures in the pop culture. Depends on the material and what they want to do with it.
If Jason or Freddy Kruger become love-interests for normal people in a movie, they will be "weaker" as well I suppose. You gotta be able to connect with em then.

Zombies aren't even scary. They plod after you. They don't have ANY powers other than infection and they're slow.

It's all propaganda put out by vampires.

The truth is vampires get owned by werewolves.

Depends. Some aren't depicted as shamblers, but as full tilt sprinters. Not only that, but as sprinters that wouldn't be hindered by fatigue toxins.

What about the zombies in World War Z or I am legend? They're fast!

Well, the lock on the door will keep the vampires away until the sun comes up, and these take care of the werewolves:

I'm much more concerned about sharks.

i guess it all depends on the screenplay writer / author and where they want to take the story. They both seem to appear at night only so a morning fight is not happening here. Vampires can just fly and evade them all together. and drop bombs on them. You never see that though. You never see vampires dropping bombs. like little grenades took take out a wolfpack in their sleep.

:bomb::wolfface:

edit: actually you never see silver bullet machine guns either. they could do some damage on the monster war scene.

I don't know if I'd use the word judge but to put it in your terms, it doesn't matter if a leopard can't contend with a polar bear, I'm not a polar bear.

Fair enough but I'm more interested in the leopard vs polar bear fight than the leopard vs blank fight LOL
