Leslie Smith Legal Defense

In early February of this year I launched Project Spearhead. Project Spearhead is an initiative to collect authorization cards from my fellow UFC fighters with the goal of submitting cards from at least 30% of the roster to determine whether we, as fighters are employees entitled to unionize. I was publicly vocal in my efforts to organize my UFC fighter colleagues in the press, online, through social media channels and in interviews. I was equally vocal in my efforts to protect fighter rights when I saw perceived mistreatment.

In the Octagon, I had won 3 out of my last 4 fights and 2 in a row with the loss coming to Cris Cyborg. I was scheduled to fight the last fight on my UFC contract against another ranked contender at UFC Fight Night 128 on April 21, 2018 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. On Friday, April 20, 2018, my opponent missed the contracted weight of 135 pounds. I attempted to extend my contract with the UFC after my opponent missed weight. However, the UFC, in perceived retaliation against my legally protected right to unionize, declined to extend my contract. In addition, the UFC advised me it would pay me, in an unprecedented fashion, my show and win money without fighting so that the remaining fight on my contract would be considered fulfilled. I was removed from the UFC posted rankings less than 48 hours later.

I have been one of few UFC fighters to publicly speak in favor of a fighter's union. I also recently launched Project Spearhead, an organization that is currently collecting authorization cards from UFC fighters to file with the National Labor Relations Board. I was the ninth ranked UFC Women's Bantanweight in the world and had won three of my last four fights, but the UFC's actions resulted in me being removed as a fighter in the UFC. It is my opinion that I was removed from the UFC in direct retaliation for exercising my rights to organize a union. The UFC has now forced me to enforce these rights through legal channels, and I need help funding the legal fees necessary to continue my fight for the right to unionize free from coercion. I want equitable treatment for all UFC fighters.

I sincerely appreciate each and every donation I may receive, no matter the size, and I consider each one a crucial building block toward equitable fighter rights, terms and conditions of employment in the UFC.

Thank You,

Leslie "The Peacemaker" Smith

Should have fought the 1.8 overweight fighter and she'd probably still have her job.

She made her bed, now she has to sleep in it.

I'm not a Go Fund Me expert, but don't most GFM give something in return?
Ex: If you donate X-amount, you get an autograph or a poster or something?

Also if she wins the suit, does she pay everyone back?

Sorry, waste of money. What legal ground does she have to stand on? UFC have the ability to release or not resign a fighter whenever they want.

Talk shit about the UFC, UFC chooses not to resign you, sue the UFC... sounds legit...

She has no hope in hell of winning this.

She was trying to organize a union on the UFCs bill (seeing large groups of fighters at hotels the UFC was paying for her to be in, plus flights etc). This is one of the downfalls of being outspoken against the company you’re working for and then not helping out when there is an issue (aspen missing weight).

You can’t point the finger when you’re the one to blame.

That's kickstarter
Go fund me is generally just donations

Unfortunately I agree and I did a post the other day about it

I don't think she will win a wrongful termination case and her coming out last week saying the ufc was not supporting her will actually help the ufc case here

I do think she was let go for trying to push the union but there are a lot of outs for ufc here to show this was not the case

I also think she was on her way out anyways and did the right thing by not taking the right and sending a message

I'll continue to support her and hope to god I'm wrong, I just don't see a way she can win this case

Makes sense
Thanks

I still can't figure out exactly what she is suing for anyway.

Unless it is my legal ignorance, I don't think it is clear from the GFM page.
That would be discrimination, for a pretty clear retaliatory response.

Donated.
I wanna see where this goes.
We should probably set up a gofundme for the presiding judge.

It sounds like a wrongful termination case

She is saying that she was doing well in the organisation and they didn't renew her contract because she was pushing the union

Problem is there are already others the ufc has let go that were doing just as well as she was and she even came out and said the ufc wasn't promoting her which shows me that they obviously had no intention of signing her anyways
They've never pushed her, it would be different if they stopped pushing her when she started pushing for a union, but that's not the case

I too hope she does well but realistically you can’t take the kind of stands she did against a company you work for and expect no repercussions.

For the record I'm donating as well in hopes I'm wrong
I just don't see it

I'll always support fighters standing up to the promotion

Again, pardon my ignorance
But what happens if she wins?

Is it a monetary win?
If so, what amount is she asking for & do the people that donated get money back?
They should.

I'm really not sure the amount that she is suing for but I would assume it would be comparable to what her last contract paid out in total + the cost of the case

If she wins she won't have to pay the people back
Go fund me works just like donating to a charity (except I don't know if you can write it off on taxes)

I agree, the people should get their money back, it can be worked into the case (the amount suing for) and wouldn't come out of her pocket at all

I stand with her. I don't think she has a great chance of winning this lawsuit, but in the bigger picture of her fighting for her and all fighter's rights, I hope that comes to fruition, it is overdue. The best athletes will never even think of getting in this sport until that happens.

Now I'm in a giving mood, feels so good.

When you give for a good cause, like fighter's rights, that have been so badly trampled under the leadership of the UFC in the MMA landscape, you are giving back to the MMA community as a whole.

So, I think I'll double down on TheMMACommunity donation button :)

WHO'S WITH ME??!!!!! :cheers::leftright::leftright::leftright::cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers:

Fighters need to make weight, but fighters also need to fight.

It's not like no other fighters have fought a fighter who were over weight.
Unacceptable to miss weight
No excuse at all for doing that
And you don’t get to fight if you lazily miss weight because that’s what you are, lazy

Seems like the UFC still has the old playbook Zuffa used on Station Casinos despite the ownership change.
