I love how you bring this up Galanis, as it for sure was a close controversial fight that at the time, fans were split.

I remember that time frame well. I will tell you this, Big Nog was my favorite fighter and this was at a time when I still felt like he was the true #1 had his fight with Fedor been a no time limit fight. I had picked Big Nog to win as many others did, however I will say that I felt back then that it should've been a draw, and if anything, should've gone to Ricco. I wasn't even aware that Ricco had tapped Nog previously until a year or so after Nog/Ricco fought in Pride, which made their Pride fight look even more in favor of Ricco knowing he'd previously bested Nog.

Ricco is an enigma to me. He has some really quality wins in mma and grappling, but I assume mentally he couldn't keep his head on straight.

Btw ECC170 @ECC170 funny reference to Bas accidentally ko'ing Ricco in sparring.

Greek777 @Galanis what do you think of the fight?
Draw? Ricco? Nog?

Rematch 2015?:)

"Let’s take a look at the recent match between Nogueira and Rodriguez to better understand the criteria:

1. Effort to finish by KO or submission:
Nogueira wins by a large margin due to his multiple submission attempts and active attack. Based on this, there is no reason to consider any further criteria as they are in descending order, however, for educational purposes we will continue.
2. Damage:
No damage from striking by either party. Possible damage from deep Kimura in round 3 by Nogueira, however, no award given to either.
3. Standing combinations and ground control:
Neither fighter showed superiority in standing skill. Nogueira dominated ground control as he constantly went for submission and gave away neutral position for inferior position, yet he was able to move back to neutral position with relative ease each time. Nogueira also had a forced reversal. Rodriguez had a reversal while Nogueira was passing guard. Forced reversals are more difficult to achieve and more valuable for ground control. Rodriguez was warned many times throughout the match to improve position but chose to stay in neutral guard without damaging strikes or attempts to pass to dominant position.
4. Takedown and defense:
Nogueira scored one clean takedown and defended 2 times. Ricco scored 3 Takedowns. Ricco wins this criteria.
5. Aggressiveness:
Nogueira wins by a large margin due to his many attempts at submission and his forward progression while striking. The referee warned Ricco many times in this area, but did not award a yellow card penalty.
6. Weight difference:
N/A. Ricco had a sizeable weight advantage but was not more than 15 kilos.

Penalties: No penalties were given although Ricco had many warnings to improve position.

Decision: Nogueira

Best regards,

Matt Hume"

Sooo......

With Pride goggles on, Noguera.
With UFC goggles on, Rodriguez.
With my goggles on, DRAW.

*So at the time, they gave it to Noguera, and I was kinda glad initially for future rematches, then thought to myself, "that was wrong, Rodriguez won".
I was accustom to td's and top control being judged higher.*

I am already starting to get curious as to when I will read a post from yours that I do not agree with 100%.

I wonder what topic we will disagree on. Can you recall ever disagreeing with me? If so what was it about?(perhaps I was wrong lol)

Sparkuri is fucking awesome. He's one of those guys I always enjoy reading on the UG and I'm glad to see him posting here! Thanks for sharing that BTW. Did Matt Hume post that online after the fight?

Hume is the man. Anyway. It's absolutely crazy to me that Nogueira won a unanimous decision. For example, right before the cards ere read.. Bas, Mark Coleman and Damon "The Retard" Perry all said it has to be unanimous for Nog. They were shocked too

But, I dunno, the one thing I could SEE maybe giving Nog the win is he tried a lot of submissions. I guess they see that as an effort to finish the fight. But honestly, Ricco escaped them all like they were nothing.

Re-watching it again I think it was a bad call. I can see the argument both ways, and PRIDE used a completely diff scoring system than the US does. Still though, two great fighters, a tough call. As someone mentioned above (ECC170 I think)... Ricco was a great fighter in his day, and you gotta wonder if he didn't get fat and party all the time, how far he would've went.

Also worth noting is that PRIDE was trying to set up Nog vs CroCop, which they did 2 shows later. If Nog lost this decision that would have lost a bit of its luster. Knowing everything I do about how corrupt every aspect of PRIDE was, I would not be surprised at all to hear if it was rigged. I'm almost convinced, to be honest.

Thanks guys!

I think Hume posted that within 3 weeks of the fight after online backlash.
Regardless of Pride criteria, I still think he was given the decision for the fight upcoming as Galanis pointed out.
Ricco was kinda blackballed for not "playing the game" so much, and verbally sticking up for the fighters over promotions.
I respected him after that much more.
