Any wrestling fans will remember the great ratings wars between WCW (TNT) Vs. WWF (USA) during the 90's.
WWF was the powerhouse of the 80's early 90's until WCW slowly started picking off all the old aging talent from the WWF.
The true turning point came when the WCW was able to land two top Stars in Scott Hall (Razor Ramoan) and Kevin Nash (Diesel) from the WWF ...and shortly after they landed the WWF's face of the organization for years Hulk Hogan. The signing of Hulk Hogan opened up the flood gates of WWF stars looking for a fresh start and looking for a better opportunity.....every week fans would tune in to see which WWF star was fleeing the sinking Titanic (WWF) for the WCW as Rick Rude so famously said when he made the historic jump to WCW Rick Rude appeared on both WWF ( pre-recorded Monday Night Raw) and WCW Monday Nitro on the same night. So that got me thinking, is history repeating itself?
UFC has been the face of MMA since 1993, UFC saw a dramatic rise in popularity around 2005 and peaked around 2012 yet still holds a strong following, but due to shady business deals and lack of respect for their fighters and fan base, both fighters and fans are flocking to the alternative MMA venue known as Bellator!
Bellator has slowly started picking off UFC talent like legend Wanderlei Silva, Chael Sonnen, Benson Henderson, and Rory MacDonald to name a few .....they have even taken the UFC long time announcer Mike Golderberg ..the Voice of the UFC for over a decade.
The Tides are turning....
Bellator still needs to land that huge name to really turn the tides but we are already seeing the first stages of a Ratings War between the UFC Vs. Bellator ...something we haven't seen since the great Pro Wrestling Ratings Wars of the 90's.
It will be interesting to see who comes out on top in this war for the viewers.
In the story of WCW Vs. WWF ...WWF came out on top, eventually absorbing most of the WCW roster ...the fall of the WCW was due to the organization becoming a circus with no true leader ...also they lost funding from Ted Turner when Ted sold his holdings and moved on to other business adventures.
We are entering into an exciting time for MMA! Fans are about to be in for a treat!
UFC who has held a monopoly on MMA since the purchase of PrideFC will eventually have to start focusing on stacking their cards once again, something they got away from when they were the lone dog on the throne ...during their reign on top as the sole #1 organization they started diluting their product and watering down their cards because they knew the fans had no real true alternative. With the rise of Bellator and fans flocking back to SpikeTV (The old home of the UFC) UFC will be forced to up their game!
Competition breeds success!
Can't wait to see how this plays out!
