After months of speculation, Tom Holland has officially been cast as the new Spider-Man. He’ll be directed by Jon Watts in the July 28, 2017 movie reboot, which will be released in IMAX and 3D.

Holland is first expected to appear in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, though Marvel’s official press release doesn’t confirm that.

“It’s a big day here at Sony,” said studio head Tom Rothman. “Kevin [Feige], Amy [Pascal] and their teams have done an incredible job. The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding. I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception. I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”

Watts directed this year’s Sundance hit, Cop Car, starring Kevin Bacon as a corrupt police officer whose car is stolen by a few young kids. The tension and respect that film paid to kids obviously inspired Sony and Marvel to take a chance on the young talent, much like they did with Joss Whedon, The Russos and James Gunn.

Holland is best known for his role in The Impossible and will next be seen in Ron Howard’s In The Heart Of The Sea (opposite soon-to-be-co-star, Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth.) The actor, 19, was long on the list of contenders for the coveted role and recently posted some videos on Instagram of him doing some Spidey-esque acrobatics.

Completely kills the vibe for me as someone who isn't into comics. I enjoyed the Spiderman trilogy from '02 through '07 and the Batman trilogy from '05 through '12, but I have zero interest in any other interpretations of those stories. Especially with different actor portrayals. It's like when they replaced the Mom from Family Matters in the last season. It's just not the same.
