He made/makes some really weird films and docs.

Approaching 80 of them for his career.

Most of them blur the line between movie and documentary for me, but I am usually entertained. Often set in rich landscapes with amazing scenery. The Docs usually feature his unique and almost disturbing voice and accent.

The main actor there is Klaus Kinski.

Herzog worked with him a lot. Kinski was a talented actor, but also a major asshole, and according to those that knew him had some serious mental issues. He had violebnt outbursts regularly.

On one film shot on location in South America (I forget exactly where), he was such a total prick to both the film crew and the locals that Herzog had to talk one of the local tribes out of straight up killing him. At one point Kinski threatened to shoot into a hut with crew members inside.

Some pretty nasty accusations came out many years after his death from his two daughters, claiming he was physically and sexually abusive.

Herzog didn't give a fuck as long as the films he shot were as he wanted lol.

Yep, he was mentally insane on and off film.
Intense and unique look, impossibly difficult to work with according to the stories.

Felt like choosing to use him as main actor was a form of self torture, short moments of amazing screen presence at the cost of constant bullshit and pain in the ass behavior. They made a documentary about that I believe.

Watching this one right now, not sure I have ever seen it. Not sure if I should watch the English dub version or the original with subtitles...

Apparently, Herzog shot the entire film on a single camera that he stole/"accidentally had gone missing" from a display case at the Munich Film School.

Aguirre... an old favourite of mine. Think I still have it on laserdisc.
Maybe time to dig out the old player....
Or maybe downloadable versions have better resolution?

I should watch some of these, only have seen Grizzly Man, which I love, and the one in South America on a river where they really move a river boat up and over to the other side

I just watched Heart of Glass(1976)
Super Weird ass film, barely a movie, rated highly on IMDB. Some epic shots as usual, particularly an early shot of some fog into a valley.
Super interesting but the weirdest of weird, apparently he hypnotized the actors. I doubted it at first but these actors are all zombied out.
The vibe is super Erie and dark.

This is Ebert on it, his full review is very good.

"This is one of the least seen and most famous of Herzog’s films, known as the one where most of the actors were hypnotized in most of the scenes. It hasn’t been much seen, perhaps because it isn’t to the taste of most people, seeming too slow, dark and despairing. There’s no proper story, no conclusion, and the final scene is a parable seemingly not connected to anything that has gone before. I think it should be approached like a piece of music, in which we comprehend everything in terms of mood and aura, and know how it makes us feel even if we can’t say what it makes us think."

"Herzog indeed hypnotized them for most of the scenes; that is not simply publicity. The dialogue which they repeat under hypnosis is pronounced with a dread certainty. It lacks life and individuality. Is this how hypnotized people speak? Not necessarily. Usually they speak more like–themselves. Eerily, it occurs to me that what we may actually be hearing are the intonations of Herzog’s own voice as he hypnotized them and told them what to say. He is acting through them."

Full movie good copy on Youtube, not that I am recommending this weird shit because it isn't something most would sit through.

Sounds like Herzog made thar film more for himself than for an audience.

Kind of like audio visual masturbation.

Yep, which is part of why I like them. Very different and they never follow the normal formula of storytelling.
He doesn't care if the all of the audience "gets it" or not, sometimes there isn't even anything to "get", just a lot of interesting scenery and scenes.

I get that vibe from a lot of his projects honestly
Yep, doing his own thing for his own reasons.
Reminds me of David Lynch with even less normal story structure.
