Dave's Song of the Day

Draggin’ the Line – Tommy James

Tuesday song of the day: Today’s song is not about cocaine, as some people say, but rather about keeping a good work ethic.

Due to drug use and exhaustion, Tommy James dissolved his band, Tommy James and the Shondells, in 1970. He had had twelve Top 40 hits with the Shondells, including two that reached #1. After resting for a while, James continued his career as a solo performer. One of his first releases after the Shondells broke up was Church Street Soul Revival, which peaked at #62 on the Billboard Hot 100. The B-side of that single was a song called Draggin’ the Line.

James and the record company thought Draggin’ the Line could be a hit, so they re-recorded the song to add more horns among other minor changes and released it as the A-side of another single in June 1971, with Bits and Pieces as the B-side. Musically, the song had a psychedelic feel to it, but the lyrics were about the daily grind of working to get the job done. Some thought it was about cocaine due to the word “line” in the title, but James insists on the more mundane meaning.

The decision to re-record the song and give it another chance paid off, and Draggin’ the Line became a hit. It rose to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was Tommy James’ biggest solo hit. James continues performing today, sometimes solo and sometimes with the surviving members of the Shondells.

The video stream isn't the best quality on that site, but the sound is solid.

That was actually a lot of fun to watch. He's so good - and a great storyteller.

Rollerskate Skinny is about when he dated Winona Ryder.
