I Can See Clearly Now – Johnny Nash

Wednesday song of the day: Today’s song was the first reggae record to top the charts.

Although Johnny Nash is American, he has long been associated with reggae music. He started as an R&B singer, but then in the mid-1960s moved to Jamaica and became enamored with reggae, starting a small label there and working with local musicians, including Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer. In 1971 he had a hit in England with a cover of Bob Marley and the Wailers’ Stir It Up.

The next year he had a much bigger hit, that he himself wrote. Nash used reggae rhythms and instrumentations for the music of I Can See Clearly Now, creating an upbeat and hopeful song about overcoming hardships. The song served as the title track of Nash’s 11th album. I Can See Clearly Now was released as a single in June 1972, a month before the album.

It was a big hit, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and sold seven million copies worldwide. While it blends reggae with other influences, I Can See Clearly Now is regarded as the first reggae song to make it to #1 on the Hot 100. It has been covered numerous times, with a version by Jimmy Cliff recorded for the movie Cool Runnings in 1993 reaching #18 on the Hot 100.

Baby Come Back – Player

Thursday song of the day: Today’s song centers on a breakup, and the two writers had both gone through recent breakups when they wrote it.

The band Player formed in 1976 in Los Angeles, with most of the songwriting done by two members, Peter Beckett and John Charles Crowley. Beckett was from England but had moved to Los Angeles a few years earlier to perform in another band. About the time he and Crawley formed Player, his wife had left him and returned to England. Meanwhile, Crowley went through a breakup of his own, so naturally when they started writing songs for their new band, broken relationships was one of the topics they addressed.

The result was a song called Baby Come Back, in which the singer tells his departed girl how sad he is and begs her to come back to him. Their debut album, Player, was released in September 1977, and Baby Come Back was the first single. It was quite a hit for a new band, going all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Player had a few more minor hits before disbanding in 1982, but is now mostly remembered for their one big hit.
