So just as the title says, what do you guys tbink about death? What do you think about the fact that one day you won't be here? Sometimes it freaks me the fuck out when I sit and really think about it, and other times it just is what it is. I guess it's just a freaky thing to think about, knowing that one day you won't exist and not knowing if anything is after.

    Yes I'm a little high

I kind of think what comes next is irrelevant. I just do my best to enjoy the time I have here.

I don't look forward to dying but I am getting a bit impatient to see what all the fuss is about.

The thing about the inevitable is you can't change it. It is a constant so why worry about it.

i think something happens after death. not sure what of course. all the near death experiences i think you would at least get some hallucinations if your brain is still intact.

I think when we're dead, we're dead. That's it. Just like there was nothing for us for the billions of years that preceded our births.

What really trips me out and short circuits my brain is: in all of time, the infinite past and infinite future, I happen to be living my 80 years now. Given the scale of all of time, the odds of me being conscious now are just... I don't even.

But I'm glad to spend my little blip in time with you fine folk.

Well like Einstein said and i'm paraphrasing, "energy does not just cease to exist" and we all are just concentrated energy. Just look at how a star or other things in the universe die. They all continue on in another form, probably what happens to us. We continue on in a different form of energy. Not necessarily ourselves as we are now, but I believe we exist in a different state of energy or something like that.

Hey OP if you ever are high and want to think more positively about death, look up on Youtube a documentary called Quantum Consciousness. Might be on Netflix too, but very interesting ideas about life after death. It is by Dr. Amit Goswami

Awesome guys. I really wanted to here what you guys had to say. Chief good post and ddog good post as well. Really makes you think. It's an interesting kind of scary, as in you want to know but do not want to know because of the outcome of how you ended up knowing

I really wish more people would think of it like you did. The odds that any of us exist at all are so astronomical it is a shame we are somewhat forced to live our relatively short lives in a manner where we pretty much work and sleep for the majority of it. If more people thought about things like this, maybe life would be better for everyone.

Do your best not to die in a hospital. Don't hold for the last little bit of "quantity of life". Quality is all that matters. No doctor or ICU nurse chooses to die in an ICU. If the end is near (cancer, severe cardiopulmonary disease, etc. Even 6 months away), hit up hospice and go home. Be with family and enjoy a morphine rush that will keep the pain away.

Get an advanced directive made up so your family doesn't have to guess your wants.

CPR sucks. It's only good for those that find themselves suddenly dead unexpectedly. Not the usual...the usual is a multiple pronged chronic disease patient that is stuck in the pipeline of "do everything". Yep, you'll live longer...usually barely. And your last days will suck terribly. I watch 70+ year old after another after another refuse to do this because they are "Gonna fight". They all think they'll be the few percent exception.

As a society, we have an unrealistic expectation of medicine and of dying.

Not that I disagree but why are the odds astronomical? What information are you using to create these "odds?"

The odds that your parents had sex at the exact right time, their parents had sex at the exact right time and so on. Just think about the odds that your parents would meet at all. Take my wife and I, for example. Had I not almost been blown up by terrorists, I wouldn't have been home on leave and met her at all and thus my son would never have been born. I would never have joined the Navy in the first place if I had not seen a brochure at my friends house. Of course, you can look at it like that was all meant to be and everything is already playing out as intended.

Check out this video, very interesting IMO

I don't follow your thinking here. Obviously the odds were in my favour because I'm here.

I don't worry about it, it's just a fact in the distance (hopefully). But that's easy to say at 28, I'd like to think I'll be at peace with it when I die.

    With you on this.

The odds on my wife and I meeting had to have been 1,000,000,000 to 1.......and I'm not being sarcastic, as we were both from different countries and I fought going out the night we ended up meeting......

I agree with you but consider it more reasoning than believing.
What I mean is, to really calculate what the chances are that we are here, we would have to know the nature of reality. To me, it seems more mystery with questions heavily outweighing the answers so the idea of calculating the chances of us being here seems off in the distance.

The process of death/dying does not concern me at all, and I am not afraid of it. I suffer from anaphylaxis, and have been resuscitated 3 times. The lead up to when the big blackness takes over is a very peaceful sensation.

However, what does concern me is how those who I leave behind will cope and carry on. (Wife, daughter etc).

Ah I see what you are saying and yeah, I'm not really going that far into it. I'm just looking at it from a point of view that I can understand i.e. odds your parents met, odds they had sex at the right time etc. I could never even begin to try and quantify something like existence as a whole nor could anyone because, as you said, we don't know enough about reality to be able to do that. For all I know the odds we all exist are 100% because there are infinite realities/universes where we exist or don't exist at all. I like that it is a mystery and I think it will remain that way forever.
