Newly-crowned Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s strawweight champion, Rose Namajunas, opened the door for a slew of 115-pound contenders by stopping Joanna Jedrzejczyk at the recent UFC 217 pay-per-view (PPV) event in New York City.

They shouldn’t get their hopes up.

That’s because promotion president Dana White is in favor of Jedrzejczyk getting an immediate rematch, based on her previously undefeated record and extended period of dominance over the strawweight division.

"I don't know yet, but it makes sense,” White told reporters at Tuesday’s media scrum (per Adam Hill of Las Vegas Review-Journal). “It's a good fight for Rose and a good fight for Joanna. We'll see."

The only reason it makes sense is because there are no other opponents in the shallow division. Rose stopped Joanna. That doesn't warrant a rematch.

I'll take it a step further, there's no big fights in a shallow promotion. After Ronda, the UFC AGAIN started putting all their eggs in one basket when it came to discussing/promoting JJ.... Didn't they even call her the most dominant women's champion (and I think even #1 women's P4P). Point is, once again they painted themselves into a corner, and have to try to resell whatever star they created.

You would think that they would've learned from the whole Rousey/Jones/McGregor issue to promote more than just a few people as unbeatable demigods... But apparently JJ is their last hope.

Think we can give her a pass. I believe she was doing all that Boogeywoman stuff with some pushing from WME to hype her fights. They like them some cringeworthy trash talk that Rogan can swoon over.

She took the loss well, respectful even and most likely won’t bring the arrogance to the rematch. I look forward to a more focussed and determined Jedichick.

On top of that, would like her to give her opponents gifts again. Was a fun gimmick. Just super glue a Reebok logo on it, sure it’ll be fine.

I think these cuck reporters are misrepresenting Egg.
What that bald prick actually means is "Cents", not "sense", every time.

There are a LOT of valid contenders in that division. It's a shark tank. Rose being champ opens up the door even more to fighters Joanna has already beat.

I've personally got Joanna fatigue and as you already pointed out, she got FINISHED. I'm not for immediate rematches in any case, but even more so if the fight ended in a finish.

None of this matters anyway, as Waterson is going to crush Torres, crush someone else and then take the belt from whoever has it.

I love your enthusiasm for Ms Waterson, and I extremely appreciate your posting of her pics/gifs/videos...... But she was shelled by Rose before, and I think that we are seeing a even better version of Rose nowadays, I'm not sure Michelle has what it takes to beat her.

Listen, I love shitting on the UFC as much as anyone else, but they really have tried when it comes to promoting any semi-marketable fighter in that division. (By marketable, I mean a feminine woman who speaks English, lets be real)

Examples of 115lb fighters the UFC has done the best they could with, in my opinion:

- JJ: She is at best OK looking when dolled up and her English is broken but good enough. KInda quirky woman. They have put a lot into her marketing, as they should and I think they have done the best they can with what they had to work with.
- Rose: The UFC were planning on her being the next Ronda after TUF20 and really got they PR machine behind her. Then she lost to Esparza, which was bad. Then she cut her hair which was real bad. Then she decided to double down on the "nature loving hippy who speak Ebonics" persona which is even worse. NONE of that can be blamed on the UFC. Once, again, they have done the best they can.
- Tecia: Personality of a block of wood. Nothing for the UFC to work with.
- Claudia and Andrade: Good looking girls, but they sound like 5 pack a day long haul truckers with broken English. Very hard to market.
- Karolina: Beautiful and exciting fighter. But the worst English of any of them, which makes it tough.
- Waterson: The whole package and the UFC knows it. They have marketed the hell out of her but injury and now the loss to Rose is out of their control.
- Calvillio: Fiesty personality, english speaker and ok looking. The UFC is really pushing her and doing a good job, I think.
- Paige Vanzant: They really went all out on her, but the losses have really taken a toll.

I guess my point is, the UFC is working with what they have as far as promotion goes. Not everybody has that "it" factor and even fewer who can be champs have it.

My take on that is the Rose that Waterson faced is pretty much the same one Joanna faced. That is, the Rose who has a sober Pat Barry in her corner and is focused. In my opinion, Waterson was edging out that "UberRose" in the standup until she made a mistake and got caught.

I truly believe Michelle is on Rose's level and has learned a lot from that fight. I really think she is going to go into beast mode on Tecia. I'm not as confident as I was when she fought Paige, but I'm pretty confident.

Are we in the fight game or the "talk shit and be IG models" game? Records, Performance, Title Defenses, Finishes ALL matter.... They had a dominant champ for years in GSP who sounded like a Looney Tunes character, the had a living Neo fighter KOing everything as a champ in Spider who spoke awful english, they had a guy with the personalty equivalent to a block of wood who was a huge promotional star in Chuck Liddell, ALL who were popular amongst diehards and casual fans.

They made a God out of Ronda who wasn't supermodel gorgeous, and honestly not very personable, but sold her above EVERYONE.... And when she got put out, the company lacked a direction, and Conor stepped into that void with his personality (over substance).... Now we have every douche in a shiny shirt and sunglasses inside trying to be WWE Attitude Era Rock in their promos.

Point is they can build/promote what they choose, how they choose.... And they have SEVERELY lacked marketing ALL of their champs not named Conor or Ronda in the last few years.

Personally I would rather see Joanna take one fight in between, and see Rose defend against Andrade. I don't think she can beat Andrade.

Id like to see JJ take one fight before going at it with Rose again. Not for nothing but champs don’t stay champs forever (except GSP maybe?) and maybe JJ has lost a step in her time training and fighting.

We'd all watch it, but what's the hurry? They should consider bringing in someone who doesn't treat bullet wounds with band-aids, 'it is what it is', and, "Who knows if he lives? Listen, this kid's made a lot of money".

To me, if you defended your belt at least 2 times, you should have a guaranteed rematch stipulation in your contract. Joanna deserves a shot at redemption, but I'd like to see her fight someone without the belt just for a change of pace. Not really sure who there is for her to fight though.

I'd have her fight the winner of Torres/Waterson, the loser of Torres/Waterson can fight Claudia, Andrade fights Rose for the Title, and I'm not sure on the current bookings, but I'd do a KK/Esparza tilt

I agree whole heartedly, and may shed a tear later at what should be, but we are most certainly in the IG model, cut a shitty scripted promo, cartoon character era in MMA.

Notice how WME promotes their shit. Its these odd promos where it has nothing to do with fighting, but people walking down a road towards each other, children playing in the street with a soccer ball, with concession stands. Only for the big cards. The “smaller cards” they just say “Hey, this card is happening.” They promote MMA like its some trendy niche thing, where it may very well be the pinnacle of sports in terms of physical endurance, strategy, teamwork (before the fight), and overall discipline.

I hate Joe Rogan sometimes, but he brought up a great point on a podcast. Mentioned how fighting is the most basic form of dominance. Someone isnt going to kick someone’s ass, then the loser isn’t going to say “Yeah, but I can dunk hoops around you.” This sport is the legit toughest of the toughest. Yet they promote it like WWE. I love WWE, but goddamn that isn’t MMA. Colby Covington gets more publicity than someone like Mousasi for some shit promo? Really?

The problem is that the higher ups do not respect the sport, and only promote what they view as larger than life personalities, not the sport itself. Which would lead someone to reasonably speculate why they dont promote certain fighters.

This is crazy to me. In the event it goes to a close UD, SP or draw there's a case to be made. If you get finished defending the belt then one contender fight should be expected before a rematch is on the table.
